Publisher's summary

American Christianity teaches the centrality of the individual: my will, my experiences, my decision, my heart, my work, and my dedication. Yet we couldn't be more unaware that Christ and His saving and comforting work are being lost. Our minds and hearts are captivated in some way by those who often preach the Christian instead of Christ.

Author Bryan Wolfmueller sounds the alarm against the false teaching and dangerous practices of Christianity in America. He offers a beautiful alternative: the sweet savor of the Gospel, which brings us to the real comfort, joy, peace, freedom, and sure hope of Christ.

An excellent summary of the Biblical Gospel and why it is lacking in the American church

Pastor Wolfmueller does an excellent job recounting his years of experience in the American evangelical church, which were very similar to my own. His summary was extremely accurate, and his presentation of the Lutheran alternative highly compelling.

Much More Than a Critique

From the title I expected a thorough critique of American Christianity from Pastor Wolfmueller’s Lutheran perspective. While I certainly got that from this book, I was pleasantly surprised to find much more than that. Pastor Wolfmueller explains all of the main teachings of Lutheranism in a plain and simple way and shows how they are in accord with the Bible. He contrasts Biblical teaching with what is commonly taught in many American churches. He does this in a winsome and loving way and as one who has first hand knowledge of what the differences are. I highly recommend this title to anyone interested in learning more about the problematic teachings in American Christianity from a Biblical perspective and the Lutheran difference.

Life changing

I have never written a book review before, and I have listened to, and rated, hundreds of books on Audible. After having listened to this book, I cannot keep silent.

This book has changed my entire outlook on Christianity. I am increasingly filled with joy and comfort from the biblical truths in it. No longer am I silently struggling with trying to earn salvation. I get it now.

Seriously, get this book, especially if you are part of the American church.

Wonderful Work

I only reluctantly picked this book up, as the title makes it sound like the all-too-familiar "This is what we're not" attitude so shamefully present in confessional Lutheranism. However, Pastor Wolfmueller does a fantastic job of expositing our Lutheran theology over and against the common Christian theology in the United States, and doing so in a loving manner towards our Evangelical, Pentecostal, and Charismatic Christian brethren, on a tone that clearly separates the person and the idea, something tragically uncommon in this day and age. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to sort out the confusion left by so many assumptions we have drawn from our exposure to American Christianity versus what we hear in our sanctuaries and read in our Bibles.

Read it. You won’t be sorry!

Some books that speak about Christianity are way over my head and I can’t stay with reading them. Pastor Wolfmueller is so relatable! He explains things in a way I that I can understand. The BEST part though, is that everything is backed up by scripture which he references throughout. I can’t express how much I’ve learned from this book. It’s helped my finally love reading and studying my Bible and to cherish biblical theology that focuses on Christ instead of the Christian. I also love that it’s available in audio form!!! I read it first and now own it in both forms. I will re listen often. Read it (or listen) You won’t be sorry!
