Harrow the Ninth, the sequel to the sensational, USA Today best-selling novel Gideon the Ninth, turns a galaxy inside out as one necromancer struggles to survive the wreckage of herself aboard the emperor's haunted space station.
She answered the emperor's call.
She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend.
In victory, her world has turned to ash.
After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem. Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her emperor to fight an unwinnable war. Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath - but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her.
Sealed in the Gothic gloom of the emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: Is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

Brilliant in a completely different way than 1st

A storytelling marvel and a book you’ll want to read twice

It’s a rather dry introspection on the detailed mechanics of Lectorhood and how exactly the Necromancy works down to a cellular level. Things pick up in the end, but it wasn’t the most fun ride until then.
Nothing like the first book.

Narrator is great
*Beware- spoilers ahead-beware*
The first 3/4 of the book was frustrating to the point of almost rage quitting. I almost stopped listening because of the “flashbacks”, not being what actually happened.
I get the build up but it felt like listening in on a conversation in a language you barely know. You recognize portions of it and can follow along but ultimately have no idea what’s happening. For that to last over 14 hours of a 19 hour book is just inappropriate to me.
For the people that will say “ it’s supposed to be that way for the payoff and that you understand the mental changes she underwent, and the possession” sure sure, I get that. Here’s the thing, I listen to enjoy, not cause myself frustration. The way it is written clearly shows that it is working towards a payoff and you can piece together parts of what’s happening. Waiting for 3/4 of the book to be over to confirm or deny your assumptions for that to occur was painful.
That being said, the last 4-5ish hours were wonderful, fun, and everything I had hoped for in this book. I look forward to the next book and I hope this doesn’t dissuade people from listening to this one, just brace yourself for aggravation (that was longer than necessary) with a fun payoff.
Good but…

The current story and the backstory on Earth are both interesting. But the castle past was just dreadful.
Narration is perfect. Absolutely on point at all times and the main saving grace.
Two main lines, one sucks and the other rocks
