Finch is in deep, with no surface in sight. He hadn’t expected a welcoming party when they whirlpooled into Atlantis - although “welcoming” isn’t exactly the right word. More like “mildly hostile”. As descendants of the powerful Primus Anglicus, the Atlanteans are not to be trifled with. But Erebus isn’t leaving until he gets what he wants - and neither is Davin. Caught in the midst of a political battle royale, Finch can only ride out the waves. And he knows he’ll be lucky to escape this underwater prison without leaving anyone behind.

Story
Harley Merlin can sense people's emotions, among other things. It's how she snagged her first job pinpointing cheaters at a casino. But she has no clue where she got these freakish powers because she spent her childhood jumping from home to home in the foster system, and her father left her with nothing more than a cryptic note. Then she crosses paths with a terrifyingly real monster. Which is when a mysterious and annoyingly arrogant young warlock named Wade Crowley steps in, introducing her to a hidden world of beasts, magicals, and covens riddled with secrets.

Like most sane people, student Alex Webber thought he was hallucinating - perhaps he'd consumed something bad at the party he'd been attending that night, or he was severely overtired. Although she denies the man's existence, Alex sees her walking with him down a road in his neighborhood he's never seen before - and can't help but follow.

I celebrated when vampires were declared extinct. Those beasts had preyed on humanity for millennia, committing senseless, brutal murders. Like the rest of my colleagues at the Occult Bureau, I looked forward to a world where we could all sleep at night - where constant cover-up jobs were no longer required to keep the public calm and unaware. But the end of vampires wasn't the end of our problems. It was only the beginning.

Publisher's Summary
If what is hidden is found, the mighty shall fall....
Time is running out. For the final ritual, Katherine will sacrifice 12 magicals with rare abilities.
Harley has already lost so much, and she can’t bear to sacrifice anything more. She will protect her friends at all costs - even if that means flying solo against the greatest evil the world has ever known.
With her parents’ Grimoire, Harley finally has a weapon capable of overpowering Katherine. If only she could figure out how to reveal the hidden pages within, to perform the spell Chaos itself has written. And the spell may reveal more than she’s bargained for....
All Katherine wants is to be queen of everything - is that so much to ask? Her little niece has been a real thorn in her side, but that’s all about to change. Pity she can’t kill Harley just yet, since the girl is still useful. There’s also the matter of that too-handsome Necromancer, Davin Doncaster. From personal experience, Katherine knows one should never trust a pretty face.
Begin Harley Merlin and the Challenge of Chaos (as we lead up to book nine, which will provide resolution to Harley and Katherine's gripping conflict!)

Hard to get through
I have really liked these books until this one. It’s such an obvious set up story to just get you to the final installment. It was very tedious with little action until the end and way too many monologues! But I like the series and will look forward to finishing it out.

So much repetition
My goodness. I have not written one review for any of these books because it’s a series. I get that there will be a review of information in each new book. I know, and understand, that this will happen in each new book in the series. However, this book took it far too far in repeating information. OMG. Just about every single chapter had about 15 minutes of whining and repeating the same stuff!! I have never forwarded a book because I would risk missing information but this book, I had no problem doing so. I had to! I feel horrible about this review but it surprised me.

Enough is enough.
Can't they ever have a bit of a win? Eight books and this series has the "good guy's" going from one disastrous failure after another! I find this just to damned depressing and annoying to the point that I don't want to suffer through another book. The sad thing is, I thought the series showed a bit of promise in the first few books, however, then the books fell into a repeat of the Yes! We got this licked, only to find out that No, they didn't scenario. I don't understand how some people likened this series to the H. Potter Books, I just can't see it. I will however throw in a nod to J.K.R. by saying that she at least gave Lord Voldermort his smug wining moments and his getting kicked in teeth moments.

Good narrator - disappointing main character
Why - just why write a story about a powerful character with no ability on when or how to use it. A character that's slow to act and being outwitted at every thought gets old real quick. This is book 8 yet her ability is displayed less than book 1.

Flat
Too much internal monologs ( filling) in the two head caracters until chapter 27. Getting a bit more action from there, but still too flat characters and internal narrow monologs.

Great book!
I was a bit disappointed by some of the other reviews on this book, to the point I considered just skipping it. So glad I didn't. This book was just as amazing as the rest! I'm not sure what they were talking about in those other reviews. Yeah, there's probably a bit more monologues and back story at the beginning, but overall this book did not disappoint at all. Loved it. Can't wait to listen to the next one.

Disappointing *spoiler alert*
This was the most painful of all the books in how immature Harley’s character acts. It’s as if she’s lost all common sense. She’s broken through atomic cuffs before, yet we have to sit through a painfully long monologue of Harley sitting and whining. Oy. Took everything in my power to listen all the way through chapter 40. Soooooo bad. The only redeeming quality was the performance.

Are we there yet?
The authors penchant for soliloquies and tedious droning, repetitive internal monologues somewhat ruins what is a great story. The story and narration is the only reason I've got this far but I did find I was taking many breaks in between listens because I found myself shouting at my phone to get to the point! And now I've finally got to the end of book 8 there's still one more??! I honestly don't know if I can finish it, I'm sure curiosity will get the better of me but this entire series would have been up there with Harry Potter if it hadn't dragged so much. It did not need 9 books. 6 or 7 would've done it if the author wasn't so impressed by her own writing style and didn't cram in as much tedious, repetitive, self absorbed dialogue. I definitely won't read these again but I probably will finish the next book just so I can satisfy my, albeit dwindling, curiosity
