Since you were old enough to hold a job, you've been hoodwinked to believe that wealth can be created by blindly trusting in the uncontrollable and unpredictable markets: the housing market, the stock market, and the job market. I call this soul-sucking, dream-stealing dogma "The Slowlane" - an impotent financial gamble that dubiously promises wealth in a wheelchair. For those who don't want a lifetime subscription to "settle-for-less", there is an alternative.

For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

One basic need all children have, educator Alfie Kohn argues, is to be loved unconditionally, to know that they will be accepted even if they screw up or fall short. Yet conventional approaches to parenting such as punishments (including "time outs"), rewards (including positive reinforcement), and other forms of control teach children that they are loved only when they please us or impress us. Kohn cites a body of powerful and largely unknown research detailing the damage caused by leading children to believe they must earn our approval.

Publisher's Summary
A crucial intervention for a society heading in the wrong direction, offering a new way to live in the modern age. Read by the author.
We are losing ourselves. We're chasing the wrong things, asking the wrong questions and polluting our minds. It's time to stop, it's time to resist and it's time to rethink the fundamental social blueprint that our lives are built upon.
As an 18-year-old, black, broke, lonely, insecure, university drop-out, from a bankrupt family, I wrote in my diary that I wanted to be a 'Happy Sexy Millionaire' by the age of 25. By 25 I was a multi-millionaire having created a business worth over 300 million dollars. Ironically, in achieving everything I set out to, I learnt that I was wrong about almost everything.... The world had lied to me. It lied to me about how you attain fulfilment, love and success, why those things matter and what those words actually mean.
In this book, I'll dismantle the most popular, unaddressed lies about happiness that we've been led to believe. I'll expose the source of these lies, examine the incentives that fuel them and replace them with a practical set of scientifically proven and unconventional ideas that will help you to live a truly fulfilled life, a life full of the love you seek and the success you deserve.

I was expecting hustle your ass off rhetoric. But he came off very relaxed, refreshing and real AF! Simple. My take from the book is, it’s all a state of being , and at the same time, if you really want it , you’ll make it happen. Especially if you understand that we don’t live forever. Honestly, I’m inspired.

Self righteousness on steroids
This feels very much the work of someone who has read a lot of business and self-help books but has very little life experience. Having not even lived ten years as an adult, been married or had kids, Steven has the amazing ability to present his opinions of these life changing events as facts and as rules to follow. He rightly makes the observation that we are all very different as if that is a revelation on the scale of Relativity, but then makes grand sweeping statements on how to live your life as if we are all the same. Money doesn’t matter or make you happy - what everyone with money a miserable? He constantly reminds us that he is successful and wealthy and also claims to have mastered public speaking! The whole thing is very preachy, pretentious and opinionated, and also so woke that it steven feels very much like someone playing are role in their own life.
Very self-indulgent and a very dull story about a very short career. There are many better books about entrepreneurs and there journeys.

Repetitive and not at all helpful
I really wanted to enjoy this as I like Steven Bartlett.
But this book just comes across as Jim trying to brag a little bit, like he still has a chip on his shoulder and needs people to see how successful he is. Ironically that's meant to be what the book advises against...
He mentions every 20 minutes or so how he has 700 staff, or a £200mil company valuation or charges X per hour for his very valuable time to the point it started to grate on me. Once you've validated yourself in the intro, you really don't need to do it every single chapter.
Also he claims the goal shouldn't be all work and focus on becoming a millionaire.... but that's exactly what got him there and allowed him from this position to decide it's not all that matters (despite him not offering any alternative things that do...).
I'd avoid this, there are significantly better books on happiness (Stumbling Upon Happiness) and far more successful entrepreneurs to read about also.

Absolutely amazing
My gosh where do I start. As a 27 year old Mum firstly I want to express that this book needs to be read by every young person in the world! Steven clearly has such a way with words, everything hits home and makes many other personal development books I’ve read seem meaningless. Chapter 19 hit the hardest. You’ve inspired me to really look at my life and work out where I want to go. I will now be purchasing the hard copy of the book as I feel I want to highlight and tab many pages and sections to refer to for the rest of my life. Simply amazing Steven!

Chapter 7 contradicts the rest
Well written & succinct but in earlier chapters, Steven describes, quite rightly, how we're all unhappy in the pursuit of more things. But in chapter 7 contradicts this by saying that having the choice of hundreds of genders is healthier than binary boxes. This is true for sexuality where the choices are limited but not gender as the latter creates exactly the same unhappiness through the pursuit of ever more things. With the number of genders on the increase all the time, it's a perfect example of pursuing a moving a target that will never allow you the gratitude to be happy, which is fundamentally the premise of the book.
Still definitely worth a listen but bringing gender into chapter 7 sadly aligns with pop culture far too readily when the book is arguing against it throughout

Best book I have read so far
I have followed Steven on linkedin and instagram for a while now and his wisdom on both platforms resonate with my internal compass of how I see the world. Themes are constant and clear on all his platforms and now this book. I can summarize this book in one sentence he said "I am a guy and not a label". That statement encompasses the struggle between creating who we think we should be and what the world want us to be.
I enjoyed how fast he talked although in a particular chapter he went too fast and reduced pace Lol... which is human. It made the book more engaging than other audiobooks I have read recently.
Chapter 19 was it for me. It brings that soul crushing reality which every aware or unaware human needs, to wake up to whatever 'call' we think we have. I love facing realities and this book puts them in perspective.
Thank you Steven Bartlett for this wonderful piece. Always a fan and hope to learn more from you! 🙏🏾

Self-serving and a bit immature
I guess we all read these books to get an insight into how successful people make it. There is no denying that Steven is a self-made, intelligent guy, you can't deny it as he will keep telling you throughout the book. I cannot get on-board with someone who has to remind me every 20 mins or so how successful he is, how much money he has made and how he is the number one social media man at 25 or that his first car was a Range Rover, nobody really cares. How he overcame hackers, lost clients and turned things back around, that is the kind of thing most readers are interested in. I look forward to the updated version in 20 years when he has less to prove.

Good, but there are better books in this category.
Good, but not the best and S Bartlett seems a bit big headed at times.

targeted at a younger audience - story ok
I like Steven, and you can't not admire his success from such humble beginnings. But..... its a mashup of his journey and wise anecdotes and quotes from other gurus. I think its a motivational book for a younger audience. Over 40s would probably think it arrogant, how many times does he let us know he/his company worth is/was c.$200m? its not a classic book but will probably sell well due to his popularity. Well done Steven, but as you say, focus on what you excel at.

Loved it.
Well read, relatable, no ego, great messages throughout and finishes strongly, which isn't always the case with this type of book.
Feel like I need to start it again already 👍🏻👍🏻.

such a great listen, and powerful messages!
Initially I thought this book did not apply to me, as I am not affected at all by social media, but I am glad I finished listening to it. Steve shares many more powerful messages and lessons that are just invaluable. Thanks for writing this book Steve!

Time is what you should care about
Not the usual personal development book!! A refreshing approach to life and a great reminder that the only thing that matters is how we spend our time.

If every therapist and psychotherapist on the planet could repeat this to their clients, like a mantra, again and again, there would be fewer therapists and psychotherapists. Because it works. Very quickly. Realising that what you're worrying about and stressing over doesn't really matter so much in the grand scheme of things is the door to freedom and healing. And the little profanity 'F**k It' is the key to that door.
