Heartbroken? Check.

Unemployed? Check.

Homeless? Check.

Self-medicating? As often as possible.

My life has been upended with a three-word text, and a meeting with my boss’s boss nearly finishes me off.

I’m in a downward spiral, and I have no intentions of pulling out.

My brother Hank has other ideas.

He’s called in a big gun, Gabriele Torrente, who drags me to New York and pushes me to get myself together.

At a family event, I hook up with the hottest guy I’ve ever met, intending to just relieve some tension.

The guy turns out to be more than I could imagine.

He’s sassy, opinionated, and he completely sets me on my ear.

I can tell Maxim Partee won’t put up with my crap.

I made a huge mistake with him, but he still agrees to be my friend, and that is precisely what I desperately need.

I live under no illusions he’ll ever need me in return.

I choose the men I spend time with, and it’s always on my terms.

An unexpected hook-up at a birthday party leads me down an unanticipated path where I meet a man who has been crushed by a mountain of disastrous events, and he’s doing his damnedest to push everyone away so he can quietly self-destruct.

Why in the hell can’t I just walk away?

Decent story. Decent narration .

So.... I liked the characters and core plot that the author created. The actual storytelling reminds me of conversations with my mom. I get way to many details about things that don't move the conversation along in a thought provoking direction. Sigh.

This particular book kept calling out to my inner editor. The Lawry in this book didn't match the Lawry I got to know in earlier books of the series. His character just felt...off. I really didn't like how Julian was used. It felt like he was a plot device, not a former lover who was worthy of the intense emotions Lawry was exhibiting. I would trim out at least one quarter of this book by eliminating superfluous descriptions. One character having detailed inner dialogue might make sense, but two does not. Lawry doesn't strike me as the type of individual who would have inner monologs about bathroom cabinets. The kink shaming offended me. Maybe Lawry and Max aren't in to BDSM, but turning Julian into a villain while emphasizing his exploration of BDSM didn’t sit well with me. We all have kinks whether we want to admit to them or not.

I like the narrator, and I enjoy his voices. I did not like his accent for Lawry. I grew up in the Midwest. I have family from Missouri. I have been to Missouri. I don't know anyone with an accent like that. It hurt my brain.

This book just didn’t quite work for me. I will keep reading and listening to this series because I have enjoyed parts of the series, and this book had entertaining moments.
