Publisher's Summary

The first novel in the Forerunner Saga trilogy by science-fiction legend Greg Bear - set in the Halo universe and based on the New York Times best-selling video game series!

One hundred thousand years ago, the galaxy was populated by a great variety of beings. But one species - eons beyond all others in both technology and knowledge - achieved dominance.

They ruled in peace but met opposition with quick and brutal effectiveness. They were the Forerunners - the keepers of the Mantle of Responsibility, the next stage of life in the Universe’s Living Time.

And then they vanished.

This is their story.

Best Halo book I've "read"!

I love Halo and have since Halo 2, but I had never read any of the books. When I heard a series was releasing about the fall of the forerunners, I had actually listened to this book right after it came out, marking it as my first. this book is phenomenally thought out, presenting a whole new living universe never truly explored before. I recommend this to all who love Halo, though it is hard to understand it's true scope without at least playing the first 3 games. Get this book, and its sequels; Primordium and Silentium. You won't be disappointed!

Halo Ethnography

My love of Halo franchise carried me through this. But my distaste of ethnographies... 3/5

very good, just dense

This was a great novel, it just is a very dense work and requires commitment to get through.

Informative

This has got to be, hands down, the most informative book in the series so far. This explains far more about the ancient history of the story than the games have even attempted to touch on.

stick with it!

Its definitely not a typical Halo book. This is more like epic space opera. Cryptum leaves you with the feeling that so many answers to questions and leaves you asking way more. I didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as the original Halo trilogy or the Kilo Five trilogy and I was definitely wrong. Want to know how the flood began? Or what came before the forerunners? Check this one out.

Needs 100 more pages.

The plot is great. Excellent answers to questions that will delight Halo lore fans. But not enough time is taken to develop the characters. They move from great event to great event with poorly defined motivation. Everything seems rushed.

What's sad is that the book feels edited-down, like the author had written a longer, better book but was forced to shorten it to appeal to a more action-oriented audience. If this is true, I want to read that longer version.

Pleasant Surprise

Being a long time Halo fan, coming up on the forerunner trilogy was like taking that history class next semester that you’ve pushed off. HOWEVER, the writing and performance of this book genuinely got me invested by halfway through the book. Excited to read the next one!

A nice start chronologically speaking

Well read and voice acted but story jumps at times into odd areas which add nothing to the lore or story. Overall if you like Halo you will enjoy this.

A good addition to the lore.

Excellent story and narration, though a little slow at times, makes it up with action fueled narrative and personality.
