Publisher's summary

Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain, yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit. Along the way, the author provides practical advice, such as the best ways to sit on the toilet to have a comfortable bowel movement, how clean your kitchen should be for optimum gut health, and how different laxatives work. She tells stories of gut bacteria that can lead to obesity, autoimmune diseases, or even suicide, and she discusses the benefits of dietary supplements, such as probiotics.

This book is a fascinating primer for anyone interested in how our ideas about the gut are changing in the light of cutting-edge scientific research. In the words of the author, "We live in an era in which we are just beginning to understand just how complex the connections are between us, our food, our pets, and the microscopic world in, on, and around us. We are gradually decoding processes that we used to believe were part of our inescapable destiny."

Fascinating New Science

I'm going to buy the book so that I can go back to read portions and check references. The material is presented with clarity and humour. Unfortunately, the reader spoilt the experience with. her strange. pauses in sentences that. made it hard to. follow.

a humorous review of our gut that all should know.

as a gastrointestinal nurse, this was an education beyond the nursing curriculum. the reader did a phenomenal job pronouncing all those long medical terms. dispite all that, I recommend this book even for non medical people.

Factually interesting, but a bit boring

DNF at 80%. I'm over the gut.

I really, really enjoy science books, especially anything having to do with medicine/the body. That make sense, of course, seeing as I have a degree in a medical field, but I really can't get enough of learning about the human body.

However, after listening to Mary Roach's Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal, which I enjoyed very much, I thought I was ready for another round of intestinal delight. I was partly right.

What Mary Roach does is she breaks up a never-ending stream of facts into a story-line, of sorts. That wasn't really done here. While I found the information interesting in Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ, I missed the personal anecdotes and stories from "Gulp," which has very similar subject matter. Also, while the narrator of "Gut" was pretty good, she didn't hold a candle to the narrator of "Gulp."

I still liked learning about the alimentary canal and intestinal tract, and I still bored my family to death with random gut facts, but it got to be a little... drab for me.

Time for me to move on to another body part.

Insight into the digestive process

I not only enjoyed listening to this program (at least most of it) but Ieared quite a bit about what goes on inside the digestive tract known as our gut. Most of the dietary suggestions are good, though I adhear to a different protocal (think Atkins) and believe fat, even in quantitiy is not so harmful, none the less I believe the auther is on the right track in cultivating good intestinal bactiria and illustrating the dangerss of antibiotics. It is informative and well paced, at times amusing and I would recomending it to anyone interested by the title.

Amazing

I love this book. It’s a quick listen and pretty easy to digest, even though there is a fair amount of technical talk. I love now having this knowledge and knowing some junk science I’ve been spoon fed is bunk. I leaned a ton. Seriously worth it. Very interesting.

Pleasant, Introductory Book

Written in a chatty style, this easy-to-listen-to book is a highly simplified look at the new thoughts about our digestive system, with an emphasis on the gut microbiome.
