Publisher's summary

This sequel to the action-packed Devil Dealing depicts the ongoing search by detectives Jeremy Ryder and Navi Pillay for the evil gangster Skhura Thabethe, dealer in stolen weapons, drugs and murder. The secondary plot shows the detectives uncovering a link between stolen weapons and the local trade in drugs. The two main plots unfold in strictly organized chronological sequence over 10 days, until a climactic ending when the two plot-lines coalesce in a spectacular confrontation between the detectives and the two main villains. Against a background of delicate emotional exchanges between victims of crime and the police, Gun Dealing, like its predecessor, explores the moral and ethical choices made by the detectives in their day-to-day confrontation with rampant and brutal crime in contemporary South Africa.

Thoroughly enjoyable to listen to in the car

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Not really. I suppose it would be better to have three or four people reading, because there are quite a few characters.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Lovely characters. Especially the women characters. Accents and different dialects were really good. I could hear every word spoken which was good. The sound quality was excellent.

What about Ian Patrick’s performance did you like?

Fantastic, really. His voice is good and his speech is clear and it was nicely paced with lots of variety in rhythm and pace and mood.

Was Gun Dealing worth the listening time?

Yes. For sure. No question. Highly recommended for a long trip in the car.

Any additional comments?

Lots of fun in among the thrilling fights and the action scenes. Very witty. Characters are so interesting. No macho guys. Very intelligent and strong women. Teasing, very funny comments between the cops. Very funny discussion about language and another one about sexism. All nicely balanced. Intelligent mature relationships. Where there are some patriarchal attitudes they are clearly all deliberate and giving insights about that kind of character. Then those same characters get taught a lesson. No thumping of tables to make points. Just lovely underpinning giving us insights into attitudes and relationships, while we get on with the action. I'll definitely get another of his books.

Wondertful story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Oh yes. It's very good. I have already recommended it to all my American friends, and those who live in Africa, too.

What other book might you compare Gun Dealing to and why?

Well, I have to confess that I read the fourth book, Death Dealing, in the same series before I read this one, which is the second book in the series. That's because I read a blurb that said you can read them in any order, and in addition I was especially interested in the one scene described in the fourth book that was advertised. So, it's like that fourth book. And they're both like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Very exciting.

Have you listened to any of Ian Patrick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but maybe I will now.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Exciting cop thriller with evil villains and tough heroes.

Any additional comments?

There's lots of funny bits, too, and I love the local accents and dialects and slang words. They're very funny.

Thrills galore

Where does Gun Dealing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

First rank

What did you like best about this story?

Nice scary thriller with lots of action and very fast-paced, with some beautiful lyrical moments too

Would you listen to another book narrated by Ian Patrick?

Definitely

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The dinner party was fantastic.

Any additional comments?

I liked the narrator - nice clear diction and exciting modulations and changes and evil characters - but there could have been a woman narrator with him to do the ladies' voices.

Top class.

What did you like best about this story?

Very intriguing story and very real and true to life

Excellent with male voices, but needs actresses to accompany him for the female voices.

Great story: needs a full cast of actors

Would you consider the audio edition of Gun Dealing to be better than the print version?

Not really. Good, but I really liked the book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The villain, Mr Tabethe. Very evil man. Horrible. The worst kind of criminal you can imagine.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Ian Patrick?

Yes. He does it very well. But there are too many characters here for one voice, I think. He is really very good with the villain and the neutral-voice narration and the main male detectives. But he's not so good on the women characters. Should have had an actress working with him. Don't get me wrong: he's very good, but it's too much for one male voice to do all the characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Oh yes, I cried and I laughed. And I shuddered, too, at the villainy.

Any additional comments?

Very, very nice characters. I loved the grandmother of the twins. And the grandmother of the young murdered constable. And the Afrikaaner detectives (so sweet). Oh, yes. I should also say: I thought the studio sound was really good. I've done voice overs myself, in a studio, and the quality here is better than I have experienced myself. No popping microphones, etc. No faults at all.

Nice crime thriller

Would you consider the audio edition of Gun Dealing to be better than the print version?

Yes, but the text is good, too.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gun Dealing?

The dinner party was great. I loved it. Better than Jack Reacher in action.

Have you listened to any of Ian Patrick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yep. Listened to the first book in the series, too. I think this one is better, actually.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Tough scene with the parents and grandmother of the murdered constable. Very sad.

Any additional comments?

This is really good stuff. New and original and exciting. Better than a lot of the American audio thrillers I have heard.

Compelling story telling

What made the experience of listening to Gun Dealing the most enjoyable?

The accents and the deep dark mysterious voice of the narrator were very compelling

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. The chase after the criminal was great. I really liked the young cop Mavis growing in leaps and bounds. The forensics woman was simply marvelous

Which character – as performed by Ian Patrick – was your favorite?

Thabethe the villain,. No question. Although I also liked the Afrikaner detectives

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, actually.

Any additional comments?

I loved the detail of the geography, the layouts, etc. Looked like a documentary, almost.

Better than the text

Would you consider the audio edition of Gun Dealing to be better than the print version?

Yes. The reader brings all those accents into perspective. The slang and the dialect words are all very clear and make sense in context. You don't even have to look them up in the glossary because the sense is clear from the context.

What did you like best about this story?

The women characters are great. Lovely teasing relationships and some fine wit, set against the startling action.

What does Ian Patrick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Intriguing dark voice with lots of character nuances. Very clear speech.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There is some really heart-wrenching stuff, given the awful crime around the city, but it is strangely uplifting too.

Any additional comments?

Only because I read these out of sequence and found the third book so absolutely brilliant - at five stars - am I giving this one four stars. It's great but the third book is even better.

Very compelling thriller

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I recommend this most definitely. It is a lovely thriller, well structured, totally believable characters, and a villain and a hero convincingly matched to each other.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gun Dealing?

The opening scene is amazing, but there's a dinner party scene that is a top-of-the-pops humdinger for both fun and excitement.

Which character – as performed by Ian Patrick – was your favorite?

I like Jeremy Ryder. He's as good as Jack Reacher, in my view. Maybe more realistic, because he's not superman.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I have to admit that there's a lot to shed a tear about. There are such great scenes with believable people in traumatic situations. And lots of action.

Any additional comments?

Maybe a woman's voice could be used for the female characters, as some reviewers have said. I think that would be a good thing. But he does all the characters very well.

Lovely thriller

What made the experience of listening to Gun Dealing the most enjoyable?

Nice characters and accents, and lots of action and thrills

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mavis, the young constable. She was great (I liked her especially because I've already listened to the next audiobook in this series and I know what she develops into: it's good to see her here at an earlier stage).

What about Ian Patrick’s performance did you like?

Very nice and easy and confident with no tricksiness.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The funeral scenes was touching and the scene where the parents and grandmother visit the captain was so, so beautiful.

Any additional comments?

Maybe it could have worked better with female voices adding to the male voice. I don't know, really.
