The Dusmen are invading, and nothing will stop Provine Sael from leading an investigation into the many questions about the northerner’s late start, and so Grog and Burk must march north as well. With the onset of the war, both sides have stripped the border of troops, and it may well be safe for the small band to slip into enemy territory and poke into odd corners in search of the truth. The north is a little-known land, home to rumors about rivers of unmelting ice, dragons, dead cities from the dawn of time, and countless other stories which may be legend, myth, fact, or a combination of all three.Grog and Burk are free, and in the short weeks since their return to civilization, the brutes (half-Human, half-Ukar) have had to face many decisions, something neither Grog nor Burk enjoys. But on their own or with the group, they uphold the honor of the Ebon Blades, a barracks of the old school, secure in the knowledge that Master Horne expects them to do their very best.

Action

Grog 2 was an enjoyable and action packed interlude. Grog is growing and learning, and is an even more incredible fighter. I have loved watching him learn and step beyond his boundaries, the ones slavery imposed on him, and the ones inexperience and lack of education inflicted.

Mostly I enjoy the fight and battle scenes, inside the pit and out. This one is going on my keeper shelf, in spite of the virtual voice and its many failures. I will be watching Grog grow with much interest.
I am even beginning to see Master Horne as something more than a cruel, greedy, selfish slave owner. While he has sent many children to their deaths, maybe he’s more than he seems. Maybe.

Never get an audible book with virtual voice!

The annoying monotony of the voice! Good gravy I’m glad I didn’t pay for it! I had no idea you could pronounce “Peter” 17 different ways or “provincial” although I’m not sure that’s actually the word since it was someone’s name I don’t think it was pronounced correctly EVER!The first book in the series had a real voice. I could tell the characters apart and it was actually funny and entertaining. The characters are likable. With this virtual voice I lost track of who was speaking and the multiple mispronunciation of so many words made the story even harder to follow! If the next in the series is virtual voice….ill have to buy the book and read it.

One of my favorite series

Ukars Grog and Burk pit fighter of the Ebon Blades are still in the employ of Provine Sael to act as body guards for her group of Empire troubleshooters / investigators during The Third North War of the empire. Recognized for their contributions in the previous book, they and their companions continue to be a thorn in the side of the dark powers. Though not the main powers behind the events of "The Third North War," they still have important parts to play.

As the story progresses we get to learn more about their companions as they continue their mission as their familiarity breeds more lively dialog, and some clever side plots. All good, and life for Grog gets better as a freed slave, even though Burk won't shut up about it.

The narration is Virtual Voice, and while not as good as the first book's reader, it is adequate for getting the story across.

Great story, lovable characters

If you don't fall in love with these characters, something might be wrong with you.

How many times can you repeat the same thing over and over to try to stretch the story. First book was amazing, this one just drones on and on with monotonous baloney?
