Publisher's Summary

The second novel in the brilliant new series from the best-selling author of Prince of Thorns.

In Mystic Class, Nona Grey begins to learn the secrets of the universe. But so often even the deepest truths just make our choices harder. Before she leaves the Convent of Sweet Mercy, Nona must choose her path and take the red of a Martial Sister, the grey of a Sister of Discretion, the blue of a Mystic Sister or the simple black of a Bride of the Ancestor and a life of prayer and service.

All that stands between her and these choices are the pride of a thwarted assassin, the ambition of a would-be empress wielding the Inquisition like a blade, and the vengeance of the empire’s richest lord.

As the world narrows around her and her enemies attack her through the system she has sworn to, Nona must find her own path despite the competing pull of friendship, revenge, ambition and loyalty.

And in all this only one thing is certain. There will be blood.

Good sequel

Still a good story, although halting a little bit compared to the first book. Must read if you liked the first.

Better than Rd Sister

Where does Grey Sister rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best book I'resd listened to this year.

What did you like best about this story?

Lawrence introduces new interesting characters and give more substance to now ones.

What does Helen Duff bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Duff's ok for women voices but a bit "flexible" for the men

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Hard to put down

Any additional comments?

Normally the 2nd book is a bit weeker than the first. this is not the case for Grey Sister. Keeps on getting better

Another cracking instalment

I have read Red Sister and Grey Sister in quick succession - they are excellent. The world which Mark Lawrence has built stacks, the plot is good, and the characters are well-developed and interesting. Am now feeling bereft at losing my connection to these characters while I wait for book 3.

Book one and two have flowed seamlessly, and what I really appreciated was the introduction to book two where a recap is given - thereby avoiding unnecessary and contrived references to book one's events. That said, the first 10 minutes of listening made me think I had missed a bit of the first book as a new character is introduced who I didn't recognise.......needn't have worried as it all became clear within the first few chapters.

The foreshadowing that has "topped and tailed" these two books is also an interesting angle - it's totally set the scene and anticipation for the final reckoning that is surely coming in book 3. If the energy and intrigue continues at the same pace, it promises to be a good one.

Narration is good, although the variation in accents for the different characters isn't as extensive as my favourite narrators' (eg; although I do enjoy the Aussie accent, it felt like the narrator's only / "go-to" alternative accent), but it doesn't detract from the story.

If you are into the fantasy genre, then this should tick all the boxes.

Great Story, dodgy production

The ultra long pauses between sentences had me reaching for the phone to often. Presumably that’s down to the production team rather narrator.

So good!

Loved this book. The story is great. A really good continuation from the first one. The voice acting was varied between all the classes which is really well done. Can't wait for the next one.

the effort Helen Duff puts in what a legend

I thought parts were predictable but the vision of the world and it's strangeness was inspired. Also very easy to visualise the characters thanks to Helen Duff's vaired narration

book two surpassed book 1 which I thought wouldn't be at all possible widening out the focus while deepening the plot lines and characterisation. a fantastic listen.

Great female-focussed adventure

My favourite thing about this series is that it's quite gritty SFF with a range of female leads; both heroes and villains, and the characters are well-drawn and complex. There's also a whole load of epic action scenes, which is always fun to listen to on a dreary commute. Grey Sister picks up where Red Sister left off; you definitely need to listen to the first to understand the sequel. The girls advance into grey class, and the convent comes under threat; although as always, the abbess is making plans and weaving webs. There's a majorly expanded role for Sister Kettle, and she and Abbess Glass both get POV chapters, which is great.

The narration is excellent; completely enthralling, with a range of accents used to delineate characters (although, they all make sense in the context of the story and aren't jarring). Definitely worth getting into the series if you like epic/high fantasy (this book has some SF elements but has more of a fantasy "feel") and characters who are willing to fight to the bitter end for what they think is right.

Captivating as always

I love how the author weaves the characters and then plot slowly but surely you find yourself so involved. So very connected to the story that you feel every bit of emotion that Nona and others feel as if it was your own.

The best narration I've ever heard.

Not bad, but not the best. I honestly think the only reason I stuck with it is because the narration is phenomenal.

Truely captivating

I have listened to a great number of books in the past year or so and read many in my life, these two novels have been very much among my favourites. So many of the fantasy books I have listened to have always contained endless rehashing of content from previous books, perhaps it is done as filler content or as a way to update people who have had significant distance of time between series editions but either way I found it to be very frustrating and unnecessary, none of this is done by this author which i found to be quite refreshing. I very much recommend this book series especially as it contains so many strong, intelligent and inspiring young women in lead roles and hope there are much more to come. As a final note I did also really like that it offered quality characters with alternate sexual preference and physical ability, shining a positive light on difference without playing to horrible stereotypes.

Bloody, amazing and ear-numbingly addictive.

Another brilliant tale from the mind that is Mark Lawrence. If you enjoyed Red Sister you will undoubtedly love Grey Sister.
