Publisher's Summary

David, unlike any Bible character before him, had the charisma to inspire a great nation. Yet in other ways he was a most ordinary man-often gripped by destructive passion, rocked by personal tragedy, and motivated by political gain. Yet, he is the one character the Bible describes as a "man after God's own heart." In this first volume of the "Great Lives" series Charles Swindoll shows how David proved his love for God many times over in an extraordinary life that left an enduring legacy of faith.

Outstanding history - well written book

David is a truly remarkable history, no question about it, and Charles Swindoll does an amazing job of reviewing the various aspects of David's life, personality and events in a very real way.

Through the book you will certainly laugh, cry and feel each event very vividly - and at the end understand why David was a man according to God's own heart.

One of those books that makes you want to be a better person, to pursue a different relationship with God, not based on the exterior but a true, personal and deep relationship with the all mighty God!

I highly recommed!

Solid Wisdom to be gleaned

Nothing wrong with filling your mind with good teaching from good men like Swindoll.
David, flawed as any man could be did always end up seeking God passionately through his failure and guilt. We can all take hope in that through our own inevitable failures we need never lose hope or trust in God's love for us. Albeit consequences will come.
David's story is riddled with human failure. Take heart!

New perspective.

Helpful to see David's life on a personal level & to know that I as well can be a woman after God's own heart.

would be five, but...

David and Bathsheba was not a Love affair. David raped her. story says David took her anywhere else in the Bible where two people sleep together it says they laid. for Mr Swindell to say that Bathsheba was partially at fault in this is just plain ridiculous, for 1, all of the men would have been off fighting instead of being in the city at that time and 2, David should have been off fighting instead of sitting in the palace at that time. there's no way Bathsheba purposely bathed in the open.

David

Chuck Swindoll has such a winsome personality and it come through in his writing. He shows us the good, the bad and the ugly of David, of whom God said that he was a man after His own heart. Chuck turns dry history into a living legend that is enjoyable to read.

His heart over actions

Mr Swindoll is an excellent Bible teacher. This book is an example of God revealing truth through his teaching. It was encouraging to see that David, although he was a man with a life of poor actions, was a man after God's heart. God sees our desires, and although we continually fail He Loves Us in spite of it because of who he is. David wanted righteousness, made poor decisions, and yet God counted him righteous because of his desires.

Fascinating bible story, told differently

More a preaching than a telling of a famous story. But though Christian it is told in a way that provides a spiritual resource for all readers.

David: A life of possibilities (for us)

David holds such a special place in scripture because he wholeheartedly loved God and took advantage of EVERYTHING God offers - victory and rewards for faith and courage, sweet satisfying companionship (Psalm 25), mercy for failures, everliving hope regardless of circumstances. David and God, God and David - a love affair for the ages. God is no respecter of persons - what He did for one man "after His own heart" He will do for us if we will love Him (above all else) in the same way. Chuck Swindoll has captured it all magnificently. He is a man of true Godly insight! 5Stars without reservation.
