With little difficulty we found the entrance to the channel. The sun was visible as a faint white disc on the eastern horizon. Suddenly my partner stopped his paddling. He pointed straight ahead. A cow moose and her calf were in the water straight ahead of us. Their heads were underwater as they fed on lush vegetation. We passed them at 10 yards and carried on. The wolves continued to howl and seemed to have this whole swamp surrounded now. From this point on I knew the swamp well. Only a moose could get through it on foot. Wolves would never have a chance to catch a moose in it. Suddenly though, I had the very eerie, unsettling feeling that the wolves were actually using us as their hunting dogs. I said as much to my partner.
