Publisher's Summary

In what may be Dickens's best novel, humble, orphaned Pip is apprenticed to the dirty work of the forge but dares to dream of becoming a gentleman - and one day, under sudden and enigmatic circumstances, he finds himself in possession of "great expectations." In this gripping tale of crime and guilt, revenge and reward, the compelling characters include Magwitch, the fearful and fearsome convict; Estella, whose beauty is excelled only by her haughtiness; and the embittered Miss Havisham, an eccentric jilted bride

Wonderful reading!

Of course we all know the story, but this rendition was so beautifully read that it fully engaged me as if I was hearing it the first time. The narrator did so well with characters that I often forgot there was only one person telling the story.

What a great narrator.

I loved hearing all of the different characters voices and personalities coming from one person. I followed it as if I were watching it in front of me.

My first charles Dickens novel

The narrator of this Audible was fantastic. He took on such a condense book all by himself and made it feel credible. There were at times where some help was needed, but for the price and small production, it was worth it. I really did enjoy it. I'm on to Oliver twist now.

Never read and thought it was time.

All in all I enjoyed the story. Out of maybe 6 characters the narrator made them sound like two or three. Numerous times I lost who was speaking because they sounded so much the same! Another thing is the boy sounded the same at 7 as he did at 20. I was frustrated that his voice didn't grow up. But all that said it is worth listening to and narrating has to.he very difficult. Four stars. Not perfect but great read.

Wonderful old story.

How wonderful to listen and hear words pronounced that are unfamiliar to me. The narrator made it seem like a whole play.

I Had Great Expectations ...

An odd piece of overtly contrived literature. The way the protagonist comes by his great expectations is so flimsy and improbable as to be embarrassing as a plot line. Glad to have ‘read’ it though, mostly for cultural literacy.

The reader did a very nice job.

A very enjoyable book

The narrator was very good, and the characters came alive. I've learned that I'm very picky about this, because the narrator either makes or breaks the experience. I recommend this book.

A Classic but...

It is beautifully read and It is a beautiful story...but it is not an easy book to endure for such a long, long time. Perhaps this one would be more enjoyable in an abridged version. Gasp!!! Sorry Dickens!

Loved it!

Dickens never disappoints! The ending could have given more information about what happened after but that's by the by

So much easier than trying to read Dickens!!!

Dickens can be a tough read. Listening to it when well narrated gives you a real undetstanding of how brilliant he was without the momumental effort required to concentrate on the entire prose passages!
