Publisher's summary

Raiders stole his childhood. It's time Corin made them pay.

When his parents are murdered, and his sister taken by raiders, Corin's world crashes in on him. Wild and willful, he joins the elite Wolf Regiment but swiftly falls foul of its swordmaster, the brutal Taskala.

The regiment becomes embroiled in a vicious civil war between the sultan of Permio and rebel tribesmen. Corin, caught in the treacherous power play between rival factions and corrupt leaders, struggles to survive. Torn between his quest for vengeance and growing hatred for the sadistic Taskala, Corin has to intervene when the woman he loves becomes the latest target of Taskala's wrath.

Gray Wolf is the first book in a trilogy featuring Corin an Fol, a man chosen by the gods to walk a dark path. The novel forms part of the Legends of Ansu, a spellbinding fantasy series. If you like tough action featuring gritty characters set to a vivid fantasy backdrop of war, and vengeance, then you are going to love this new tale by JW Webb.

A splendid tale

Overall, a splendid fantasy tale. Set on revenge Corin* sets to right wrongs. Good world building. Enticing characters. Somewhere in there either I lost the time line or it wasn't spelled out just so. He leaves home at said age, but yet along the way this story spans 10 years? There is not 10 years explained in this tale. The last reference of age only covers 2 years. I accidentally started the 1st book in the next series and it states it's been 14 years since he has been home, yet one of the main time lines in the next series is referenced in the middle of Gray Wolf. I will keep note of this and change this review if the timeline somehow matches up when I am all through with reading/ listening.

Epic Fantasy

The story took a few chapters to get into, but once it had its footing it moved along quite nicely.

This tale follows Corin an Fol. It begins with a raid on his village and the slaying of his parents and the kidnapping of his sister. And continues up through his time as a soldier.

Corin was a lot like James Bond or Will Riker because he was always shacking up with the ladies. I felt this detracted from the overall story and thus deducted a star. The rest of the story was quite good. The fight scenes were vivid. And there is a splash of supernatural.

Loved the Irish narrator.

Accent

I love the narration and accent. It helps me to envision a different land as I drift away on Corins adventure. The high emotional moments blend well in this surprisingly good discovery of self and realistic new world.

New Author + Favorite Narrator = Great Book!

JW Webb is a new author for me. The writing is so vivid and the imagery makes the characters and scenes jump off of the page.

Andrew McDermott does an excellent job giving each character a distinct voice. You can really tell he has such passion for his work. His accent is a perfect fit for this story. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

A great new gritty and dark epic fantasy

Like glen cooks black company? Then this is a new series to sink your teeth into and enjoy. The writing of Webb and the narration of McDermott are a dynamite combo that will hook you and drag you along for the ride. It’s a tale of life and death, love and loss, battles and ale. It take the dark and gritty view of the mercenary and brings you to the ground floor of the battles and gives you plenty of
Plot twists characters to love and hate and who you will connect with easily. The plot gets deeper as the story goes on and deeper relationships are revealed and ties discovered that will shock you. Can’t wait to read/listen to more of the series. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

It's a little basic

I think the narrator did a great job with what he had to work with. I found the story a little dull and the wording very simplistic, and it was one of the few books that I just wanted to be done with. This one was definitely not for me.
