Publisher's summary

Narrated by Grace, an independent and feisty young girl, the novella focuses on the tension created by her confusion over the contradictions in the world around her. As the plot unfolds, a series of shocking revelations leave Grace bewildered by the behavior of those she loves, and in the end, she, and the reader, are left with unresolved questions about forgiveness and redemption, but certain that war brings only great human suffering.

Critic reviews

"This is a deeply moving story, one not given to easy resolution, just as the issues of that long ago war - slavery, self-determination, the privileges of class - defy a complete resolution even today.” (Barry Kitterman, author of From the San Joaquin)
"With a child’s simple reasoning, Beverly Fisher’s narrator enacts the stalwart sweetness of being called to the treetops, where she seems to sit, dandelion fluff in her hair, measuring the world against a farm’s laws of sacrifice and impermanence while men and women war against each other inside the home and out of it.” (Amy Wright, author of The Garden Will Give You a Fat Lip)
"Not just a period piece, this novella is filled with subtly suggested parallels to our time, or anytime, since war is ever-present in human history.” (Malcom Glass, author of Bone Love)

One of my favorite books - ever!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - I have highly recommended this to everyone. I hope there is a sequel and a movie. I have heard it could become a play.

What did you like best about this story?

The author read the book and did an excellent job. Well written. Believable and kept me wanting to hear more. Just a great book. Makes you realize how hard the Civil War was on both the North and the South. The majority of the people did not even have slaves and would never had been able to afford slaves. A harsh senseless devastating war as told through the eyes of a 6 year old.

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was probably how they would hide the animals when the armies came through. How she had to learn to lie when asked about where things were hidden.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It drew me into the era through a child's eye - made me more aware just how sad this war was and the real people who lived and died in it. (Fighting or not.) The bad and crazy things desperate people do to survive.

Any additional comments?

I hope this becomes a best seller in print and on Audible.
