Publisher's summary

In 1521, the Aztec treasure, considered to be the greatest ever assembled, vanished from the capitol city of Tenochtitlan. Almost five centuries later, former Navy SEAL Logan Dodge finds a mysterious gold coin off of a secret ledge in the Florida Keys. When he learns the origin of the coin, he goes on a mission to find and secure the treasure for the people of Mexico.

But he’s not the only one who’s caught the scent of gold. A notorious Mexican drug cartel known as Black Venom is right on his heels and will stop at nothing to take the treasure for themselves. With the help of one of his old Navy buddies, a notorious mercenary, a beach bum Key West charter captain, and a marine geologist, Logan races to find the treasure and take down the drug cartel while he’s at it.

Gold in the Keys is a shoot-‘em-up, beat-‘em-up, speedboat-chasing, get-the-girl, treasure-hunting romp in the Florida Keys.

Eye roll…

Lots of unnecessary action just for the sake of filling pages. It’s kind of a neat premise which is the reason for three stars. Could be four stars. But besides the promising start it turns predictable and formulaic. I think my 23 year old son would,Ike it—he likes a lot of action, it’s fairly short, and he hasn’t read some of the more established authors in this genre. The performance was average as he didn’t change voices much.

Storyline interesting. Language too simplistic almost as if a high school sophomore wrote it.

Storyline interesting. Language too simplistic almost as if a high school sophomore wrote it. Think of it as a child’s crayon drawing compared to a Picasso painting.

Simplistic and Unrealistic

This is not the quality of Thor, Taylor, Flynn, or Greaney - not even close. The story is rather bubble gum, the characters simplistic and lacking depth. It is a bit James Bondish with girls throwing themselves at Logan, he has all the money he needs, gets the gadgets ... This might be a good summer vacation beach book ... nothing all that suspenseful, moves along, unrealistic and generally entertaining.

Good story but....

It is a good story but I wasn't really feeling it as far as narration was concerned... The story paid to close attention to minor details which I feel was done to try and make the book seem longer overall. And the narrator just didn't have that natural feel.....

Needs to work on terminology

First: There are no "ropes" in the marine world - we call them "Lines"- unless you are talking about Metal ropes/cables used in hoists or long term mooring, towing situations. There are no Floors in the marine world, they are called Decks. Walls are Bulkheads, ceilings are called Overheads and Steps are called stair towers or ladders. Maps are used by land forces - the Marine world uses Charts and Chart Plotters. And one more thing in Book 2 ((yes I tried one more of the series) - I don't know what a kind of a weapon a MAC 10 Uzi is. One of the Terrorists was using it on the Island - I always thought a MAC 10 was an American designed and built weapon while an Uzi was developed by Israeli - The two weapons don't even look similar nor do they have the same rate of fire. And I usually load "rounds" in to my magazines and often strip rounds from "clips" when loading magazines. Also in book one - I must of missed how they found out the name of the Spanish ship where the gold was... and what happened to Issac? After the first dive with the Geology Professor (who later studies Marine Bio - a real Renaissance Prof) and her research group. The first dive had 5 divers the second just three - Jack was accounted for as he remained onboard the boat but Issac just disappeared until he rode his bike home...And a RHIB (ridged Hull Inflatable Boat) like the ones used by the terrorists would sink if was deflated and with the hull riddled by bullets...And the use of one in rough water (in the Storm) is actually safer in most cases than a similar sized standard center console. And "backing off a beach" with a standard outboard motored boat is a great way to swamp the boat - I think most boat drivers would try and turn the boat around by hand near shore before getting in it to drive away...
