Publisher's Summary

A ruthless young assassin continues her journey for revenge in this new epic fantasy from New York Times best-selling author Jay Kristoff.

Conquer your fear, conquer the world.

Mia Corvere, destroyer of empires, has found her place among the Blades of Our Lady of Blessed Murder, but many in the Red Church ministry do not believe she has earned it.

Her position is precarious, and she's still no closer to exacting revenge for the brutal death of her family. But after a deadly confrontation with an old enemy, Mia begins to suspect the motives of the Red Church itself.

When it is announced that Consul Scaeva and Cardinal Duomo will be making a rare public appearance at the conclusion of the grand games in Godsgrave, Mia defies the Church and sells herself into slavery for a chance to fulfil the promise she made on the day she lost everything.

Upon the sands of the arena, Mia finds new allies, bitter rivals, and more questions about her strange affinity for the shadows. But as conspiracies unfold, secrets are revealed and the body count rises within the collegium walls, Mia will be forced to choose between her loyalties and her revenge.

Violently good

I loved this book. Sometimes the violence made me cringe a bit, but Holter Graham is such a brilliant narrator that he sweeps you up in the fight. Can’t wait for the next book.

Mr. K... I love/hate you

The bloody beauty. That is this series ... and also the main character's nickname, but still. This book (and its firstborn sibling) are both beautifully written and bloody. I love them.

The world that JK has woven here is a place I never wish to leave. Even if, at the end of this series, we see no more of Mia, I would very much like a few more books from this world (please and thank you, Mr. K)

As for why I love/hate our dear author? Well, you will just have to read it and find out for yourself.

The only thing I would recommend to you is purchasing a copy of the paperback as well so you can look at the beautiful cartography within.

entertaining but with some problems

okay so I don't really review often but I have to with this book. whilst the book is pretty entertaining I can't help but be irritated by one major problem, and that is that the majority of the gladiatorial parts of the book are quite obviously ripped off from the Spartacus TV series. the task master with his whip, the champion gladiator disliking the main hero, his affair with the dominus, the expression that the hired help uses when talking to the dominus and many more, it's not even hidden, it's glaringly obvious. My only other problems with this book is with the narrator, whilst on the whole he is quite good, he often seems to forget who's voice he is doing and often Mia speaks with a man's gravelly voice. He also occassionly puts weird pauses mid sentence that can complete throw you out of your immersion. my final flaw is that he really needs to move slightly further away from his microphone when recording because you can hear every moist mouth smack and his overly loud swallowing, after a while it starts to grate and makes it hard to pay attention to what's being said. With these exceptions, on the whole it's still a fairly enjoyable book with the ups and downs you expect after the first one and had a solid ending that makes you look forward to the next installment. Not as good as the first book but worth listening to just to get through to what will hopefully be a good final book

Awe inspiring

This series obeys none of the rules of books. Nothing can be taken for granted, nothing assumed. Just sit back and hang on for the duration. And prepare to swear a lot as Kristoff carelessly mangles your heart.

Absolutely fantastic book with a brilliant narrato

I remember originally taking Nevernight off my reading list because I couldn’t be bothered to suffer through yet another ‘kid goes to school of his/her chosen skill (assassin in this case) and becomes the best in the world at what they do’ type story. Coming of age just really isn’t my thing and I was totally happy to kick this series to the curb because of that. I then had a good amount of people telling me that I needed to give it a chance and just read/listen to Nevernight.
So I did.

And I was blown away.

I then eagerly downloaded Godsgrave and was equally, if not more so (probably more so) blown away by this book. I say more so because this had so many explosive revelations that just set the third book up perfectly.

With Godsgrave, Mia decides that her vengeance is more important than the wishes of the Red Church, so she opts to go against their wishes in order to kill the men she needs to see dead. The whole ‘going to school/church’ dynamic has been thoroughly left behind in book one. Mia is no longer on the lower rungs of the ladder as far as the church is concerned after the events of book one. This sees her having a bit more freedom to get out and stretch her legs.

Godsgrave is set predominantly in the gladiatorial arenas and collegias (think modern day sport teams) where the gladiators are training and fighting their way towards the biggest event of the year on the gladiatorial calendar.

I have seen a fair few reviews that don’t like the informal writing style. I think it works wonderfully (can only speak for the audio version) and think the narrator brings the piece to life in ways simply reading it in my head couldn’t manage. So bravo to Holter Graham for his stellar work. If reviews on audible went up to a six instead of a five, his narration would have punched it up to a six.

The back and forth banter between Mr Kindly and Eclipse was, as ever, some of my favourite moments of the book. I love the dynamic between the shadow cat and wolf. As far as other character work goes, there is plenty of it. Characters you thought were on the wrong side of good and evil may make you think twice and new plot arcs involving current characters give some of them some incredibly interesting developments. I am already far too eager for the third book.

The few negative aspects of the book I had ready for my review changed when, as the end of the novel drew near, those lingering questions were answered. Oh, and regarding the ending … What an ending! Certainly didn’t do anything to stop that burning eagerness I already had for the third book.

In short: Pretty damn awesome. A bit better than book one in my opinion which gives me even higher hopes for book three.

I have no words

Thank you to Harper Voyager for my copy of this book via Netgalley. I also have an audible copy of this book. I listened to about 60-70% of this book and also read some of my netgalley copy. After I finished Nevernight I knew I had to jump straight into Godsgrave.

Well, I got to the end of this book and I wanted to hunt Jay down and force him to tell me what happens next. Haha okay, maybe not that extreme I am no stalker but seriously Jay! How could you end it like that! How am I supposed to wait until Stabtember to get all the answers I need. Like really need.

Okay well once I got over that initial reaction and really thought about it I felt exactly the same! Jay, you really test me!! I had such a book hangover I couldn't start a new book!

This was much easier to get into than Nevernight. Whether that is because I was more invested or because there was more indication when the story changed timelines I'm not sure.

Mia was as kick-ass as ever in this story. I love Mia. I love her sarcastic, witty remarks. I love her companions too. I love how they are such opposites yet they provide exactly what Mia needs.

I loved The Gladiatii. This was a whole new world. Mia thought the Red Church was brutal until she entered this world. There are some really great characters in this bunch. My favourites were Maggot and Sidonius. Both were such different but interesting characters. They both had backgrounds that you can't imagine having to face.

Jay was as brutal as ever in this book so don't get too attached to anyone. You are likely to get your heart broken into pieces.

I am both looking forward to and dreading Darkdawn. We know that Mia will die in Darkdawn. I don't think Jay is lying about this and quite frankly I don't think I am ready. On the flipside, I NEED to know what happens next. Oh, Jay, you have really put me between a rock and a hard place!

Flawless

Honestly, I couldn't find a complaint to make here if I tried. Plot, character development, structure, they're all managed artfully and the voice actor is the cherry on top of an already ridiculous cake.

A surprisingly enjoyable sequel

This is an outstanding sequel to the first book.

I genuinely thought I wouldn't enjoy the book, however it was riveting and compelling. Admittedly there were sections that were less enticing. Overall the feel remained true to the first book.

I enjoyed the character development, and whilst I didn't agree with the character actions I did find that the actions were true to character.

It was also satisfying to watch the word building and learn more of the dark.

I read the first book, so coming to terms with the reader took a little while. By the end I felt he fit the book well.

It's nice to listen to a book with a realistic female protagonist. She makes no apologies for being broken.

Great tale that moves along at a cracking pace.

Really enjoyable story, easy to listen to and simple to follow. i spend a great deal of time driving and use audio books to help chew up the hours. This book was the perfect balance for that task, a lot of action, easy to pick up where you are at with the story afrer you put it down for a few days.

Ending was great

The middle section of the book was a bit slow and not very rewarding, there were so many weird loose ends that I didn't understand but they all came together perfectly at the end. Awesome ending, a little bit of commitment to stay till the end will be very rewarding
