Publisher's summary

The Taskforce has stopped countless terrorist threats across the globe, operating outside of US law to prevent the deaths of innocents. But now, along the fault lines of the old Iron Curtain, the danger is far greater than a single attack.

With Russia expanding its influence from Syria to the Baltic States, the Taskforce is placed on stand-down because of the actions of one rogue operator. Meanwhile Pike Logan and Jennifer Cahill travel to Poland, hired to verify artifacts hidden for decades in a fabled Nazi gold train, only to find themselves caught amid growing tensions between East and West. A Russian incursion into Belarus under the facade of self-defense is trumped by a horrific attack against the United States, driving NATO to mobilize even as it tries to determine who is behind the strike.

On the brink of war, Pike and Jennifer discover that there is a separate agenda in play, one determined to force a showdown between NATO and Russia. With time running out and America demanding vengeance, Pike and Jennifer race to unravel the mystery before a point of no return is reached. Unbeknownst to them, there is another attack on the way - one that will guarantee World War III.

Brad Taylor never disappoints!

This the third recent release where some Audible listeners posted negative ratings before having the time to listen to the espionage novel even at 3X listening speed. The other two were Foreign Agent by Brad Thor and First Strike by Ben Coes. I usually listen to books at 2X recording speed because that is most comfortable for me. Ghosts of War, the 10th novel in the Pike Logan series, is a solid 5 star espionage thriller which I recommend, but it still is not as good as First Strike by Ben Coes. First Strike ties Back Blast by Mark Greaney for the best espionage novels released so far this year. I use the same criteria another Audible listener has stated for awarding 5 star ratings: I believe it must be an outstanding book which I look forward to listen to again. Ghosts of War easily meets those criteria.

This novel is a continuation of The Forgotten Soldier, the prior novel in the Pike Logan series, but I like this story more. It picks up exactly where The Forgotten Soldier finished.

Pumpkin King?

1. Starts off slow building the plot line, typical for this genre but annoying and somewhat boring.
2. No task force drama!
3. Pike's story is told in the 1st person, makes the book entertaining, good point
4. Shoshana aka Pumpkin King - this plot line just comes off wrong, I don't like it and the whole thing seems to distract from a decent plot and Pike Logan action
Overall a good book, and maybe I'm getting too picky these days but if I never hear about Shoshana and the Pumpkin King again, that would be just fine

An Anomaly? Lead Zeppelin? Hopefully.

I hanker and pray for Ghosts of War to be the one and only grievous washout in this otherwise superlative series.

The instances and examples of foolishness and folly in Ghosts of War are innumerable — there's enough gobbledegook in this book to fill the Black Hole of Calcutta. Ipso facto, if I were to write a proper review and support my harsh criticism with an example or three, then I'd either spoil the plot for someone presently listening to this series in sequential order or dissuade potential listeners on the cusp of deciding whether to begin this series in the first place. And I choose to be neither a spoiler nor a dissuader.

To conclude my improper review I shall state three indisputable facts. And you, good reader, shall abide.

A. Each book in this series, prior to this one, is worthy of 4-5 stars. Purchase and listen.
B. Henry Strozier and Rich Orlow are narrators worthy of 5-stars, respectively. Listen and enjoy.
C. Some people love kittens, some people love puppies, and some people love to eat kittens and puppies. Ponder and pray.

Time for Shoshanna to retire

I've only read the first title in this series and listened to some of Brad Taylor's Audible short stories in the Task Force saga. The fundamental concept: ex-Spec Operator Pike Logan and his partner/gal pal anthropologist Jennifer are pretty entertaining stuff. Still working for a covert special operations off-the-books team, 'The Task Force', Pike and Jennifer and their front company, Grolier Recovery Services, travel the globe pulling off all manner of missions. It's a solid formula and works except when Taylor tries to mix things up a bit like this story. The former Mossad agents Aaron and Shoshanna add nothing to these adventures and are a distraction. The Shoshanna character is unbelievably annoying and in this book really ruins the whole experience. She's supposed to be so bad a** and a "little demon" killer which is fine but the author repeats these descriptors over and over again until you want to puke. I made it to the end but from this point on will only read or listen to Task Force stories that don't feature Shoshanna.

Great book, decent narration.

Narrator: the switch between the two narrators was a bit jarring, especially when different narrators voiced the same person in different chapters, but I got used to it after a while. Still, there's no reason one person couldn't do all of it.

Taylor hits it out of the park... again!

This is no doubt Brad Taylor's best work yet. The characters great and the story is compelling. This is a must-read for every fan of the genre.

everything awful

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

good narrator and good story with decent dialogue

Has Ghosts of War turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, just this reader and autor

What didn’t you like about Henry Strozier and Rich Orlow ’s performance?

Don't know which was which, but the young man sounded like a teenager reading out loud for the first time Older man ok

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger and disappointment. The author had horrible and redundant dialogue between his characters that changed from interesting in earlier books to childish and silly conversations.

Any additional comments?

Author was very repetitive in conversations and dealt over and over again with the same silly give and take. Completely unbelievable scenarios out of the realm even of soap opera nonsense. Decent and interesting characters from earlier books were reduced to bickering adolescents through psychological mumbo jumbo that was nonsensical.

Ghost of war

Pike Logan, once again delivered another great character in a series of great stories.
Pike Logan just like Mitch Rapp or two great American Warriors

Just keep them coming.

I love the interplay between Pike and Jennifer, and Aaron and Shoshona. Each partner brings something different to the table. This one was all about the four of them and the threats that always follows. Please give us more. Enjoy!
