  • Summary

  • Please note: this series contains mature content and listener discretion is advised.

The first ghost Jason King ever saw was his brother's. And when the spectre told Jason that he needed to find their estranged father, who disappeared during their childhood, his life was changed forever.

When documentarian Ben Lawrence reads an article about Jason, now a western Sydney security guard and part-time ghost hunter, he embarks on a seven year journey into a gothic world of suburban graveyards and broken souls.

Paranormal activity, a family's terrible forgotten secret and a police investigation converge in Ghosthunter, a part family memoir and part true crime podcast. Years of self-reflection and estranged characters from the past bring Jason and Ben to a confronting conclusion – that sometimes the most terrifying ghosts are the ones we find within ourselves.

Not What Was Expected

This podcast was not what I expected. I was expecting a story about a ghost hunter and his adventures with the paranormal. While Jason King is that, there is very little of this in this story. It’s mostly about his unusual life and the search for the father he never really knew. A man who turned out to be a monster and how it affected Jason’s life along with others. This could be difficult for some to listen to and each episode has a disclaimer. I am glad that hopefully Jason found some peace.

Ghost-less, natural not super

Not about the ghosts that can be seen through, but more about the ghosts of living a life and the wake of hurt that the journey can come with, stayed until the end!

Really Interesting Character Study

If you're a fan of podcasts like S-Town you'll likely enjoy this. It's a mix of true crime and character study, with the added mystery of helping a man uncover his past. You hear from the ghost hunter himself, from various of his friends and family, and follow along on his quest to find his father. Note though, if you're looking for a podcast about paranormal investigation, this isn't it. The guy at the centre of all this just happens to be a ghost hunter.

The narrator is good, as is the production quality, and throughout it's touching, sad and interesting. Take care to heed the content warnings though, as life has not been kind to many of the people involved.

Not what you may think.

I downloaded this as something Audible was giving away. If there was a charge after, I'd have paid. I was expecting a daft ghosthunter story, instead we get the story of the Ghost Hunter, Jason King. Ben Lawrence is a great narrator as this is his documentary and he spends a lot of time with Jason. Jason's story is unbelievable tragic and the horrors faced here are all very human.

Some episodes come with trigger warnings and I warn you that they are required. I am not joking or exaggerating that there are horrors here.

This series might not convince a sceptic that ghosts exist, but no one can deny that the past haunts the present.

Thought provoking reporting of trauma and recovery

This is a story that builds and ghosthunting is not it's focus. It is considered reporting of the impact of trauma and the winding path of recovery. I am glad I ignored the early mention of orbs and stuck with this thought provoking story.

No, sorry.......

Only lasted 15 minutes, lost interest when he mentioned 'orbs'.
You cannot claim to be a serious paranormal investigator without dismissing these as the flash-illuminated dust particles that they obviously are.

Everything a Character Study should be

Downloaded this thinking it was going to be a trashy pseudo science series that may irritate me. How wrong I was! Don't be mislead by the title and the first 15 minutes. This is a documentary piece about how the 'ghosthunter's' childhood trauma still affects him and those around him, in a fascinating character study. It is masterfully told and the author pulls no punches. The drama of the story is allowed to speak for itself.

A gripping story

Not at all what I was expecting but a haunting story of searching for something innocent and finding a harsh reality. I had to listen to this in one sitting, reduced to an almost zombie like state and am left with more questions than answers.

Ghosts come in many forms

Be warned contains subjects of sexual abuse & domestic violence.

Jason meets his brother he never knew he had & after he dies sees his spirits & from there starts hunting ghosts. But also needing to know more about why he didn't know he had a had brother till he was in his late teens. Also wanting to know how did he get the scare on his face & why can he remember most of his childhood. This takes place over several years with what started with an article in the paper, Ben befriending Jason, accompanying him on some of his ghost hunts, while helping to work out what happen to Jason when he was young & who Jason really is today. Starts in one place & ends somewhere completely different. I found this a really interesting listen & binged it all in one day. If you're put off by the 'ghost hunting' aspect, this is a small part of the story & small part of Jason, this is more the foundation or backdrop of what sets of a journey of discovery.

Gripping, immersive and short.

This was an interesting one.
Thriller documentaries aren't really my thing but this podcast got me hooked immediately.
Between the characters and the narration this series found a sweet spot.

Unfortunately I think this should've been longer.
Literal years would go by during each episode but it never felt like it.
My immersion would break the instant a character would say.
"I haven't seen him in a while"
Even though I literally heard them talking a scene before.

All of this would get worse near the end with a rather anticlimactic ending.
Yes, that's how life works but this series was partly building up to a moment of human revelation.
A revelation that occurred in the passage of 5 seconds.

With all of that aside...
If you like strong narrated stories or documentaries give it a try.
If you dislike major time jumps and anticlimactic moments give it a miss

The only ghosts are the ghosts of his past.

It doesn't have much to do about ghosts, but the story told might just be more interesting than Ghost hunting. Had to listen till i finished the story.

More than a "Ghosthunter"

Whilst the title describes who Jason is, it's not an accurate depiction of what the audiobook entails. In saying that, I was pleasantly surprised by the captivating story uncovering Jason's life. The only thing that bothered me is that it didn't quite feel complete in the end, but it is a documentary and there's always going to be a risk in that. The audio was really well done and it was overall a great listen.
