Publisher's summary

Please note: this series contains mature content and listener discretion is advised.

The first ghost Jason King ever saw was his brother’s. And when the spectre told Jason that he needed to find their estranged father, who disappeared during their childhood, his life was changed forever.

When documentarian Ben Lawrence reads an article about Jason, now a western Sydney security guard and part-time ghost hunter, he embarks on a seven year journey into a Gothic world of suburban graveyards and broken souls.

Paranormal activity, a family’s terrible forgotten secret and a police investigation converge in Ghosthunter, part family memoir and part true crime podcast. Years of self-reflection and estranged characters from the past bring Jason and Ben to a confronting conclusion - that sometimes the most terrifying ghosts are the ones we find within ourselves.

Critic reviews

"True crime and the paranormal collide in Ghosthunter... Much like Serial and S-Town, Ghosthunter starts off following the story of an eccentric man on a Quixotic journey, then morphs into a tale focused more on family and foibles than the supernatural." (Rolling Stone)

Surreal with smart narration.

It was like watching a program because of the ambience. Insightful and intriguing. Will give this a re-listen!

Excellent

I really enjoyed the combo memoir / true crime podcast type of story. I’d like to hear more like this in the future.

No memory vs bad memories; you choose.

Ben Lawrence is a journalist and the story is about a middle-aged man who has no memory of his childhood. The man happens to hunt down paranormal activities as a hobby and that is the extent to which this is a ghost story. That was disappointing. However, if you love This American Life or Snap Judgement then you will enjoy this character study.

Although I found myself saying "Well, duh" to the narrator quite a bit (is it really a revelation that the son of an abuser has anger problems?), in the pursuit of his childhood memories, this true story's main character is forced to confront the fact that his father is a monster. Is it a blessing to not remember such a childhood? Or would you want your memory back? It's a good question.
