Story
A self-proclaimed skeptic, the food writer dismissed rumors of a mischievous resident poltergeist named Lucy when he moved in, but he quickly found himself at a loss to explain the disembodied footsteps and mysterious odors that seemed to plague the old house. Soon, he was talking to neighbors and fellow homeowners, and it seemed that everyone had stories of strange events and supernatural occurrences in their own dwellings. Story
It is as scary as it is exciting: this is how most people would describe a paranormal experience. While others encounter it even when they don't want to, others search for the thrill, going so far as visiting places out of the country just so they can feel the suspense. Haunted forests, abandoned ghost towns, creepy creatures, cursed roads, and other paranormal events - all these things happen for a reason. Murder victims manifest themselves perhaps because their justice is still not achieved, or perhaps, they simply were not ready to go.

Story
Imagine getting out of the bath and finding blood in four of your six rooms. That’s not the plot of a B-movie. That’s real life. There’s a reason you’re drawn to horror films, and they’re not as far-fetched as you thought. FBI data shows that four out of 10 homicides and six out of 10 rapes go unsolved, and this isn’t just down to shoddy police work or a failing system. Sometimes, there just is no rational explanation. Strange things happen every day, and many of them are never reported. But then, many of them don’t end in horror.

They live in shadows - deep in the forest, late in the night, in the dark recesses of our minds. They're spoken of in stories and superstitions, relics of an unenlightened age, old wives' tales, passed down through generations. Yet no matter how wary and jaded we have become, as individuals or as a society, a part of us remains vulnerable to them: werewolves and wendigos, poltergeists and vampires, angry elves and vengeful spirits.

An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Don’t waste your time
It takes a stunning effort to make ghost stories boring. But they pulled it off here.
Flabby, passive, redundant, clinical, cliche-ridden writing murdered this book, which reads like a cross between a term paper and a police report.
Things like “a (grave) stone was set up and erected.”
Yup ... let’s stamp out and abolish redundancy ...
Turn a mess like that into an audiobook and it becomes fatiguing to listen to.
I couldn’t finish it ...
A good editor could have fixed this ...
I really was excited to read this ... but was disappointed to discover that the writing was more of a horror than the stories themselves ...

A Spookums Dream
** I received this audiobook for free in exchange for my honest review **
This audiobook is a neat collection of spooky ghost & paranormal related stories at its core. Its a fun listen with a lot of interesting stories that I had no idea about.
The narration by Martin James is passable. My gripe with his narration is that he's an up-speaker but doesn't change it up. Its incredibly easy to zone out with the narration and miss something in the story. I would recommend that Martin would try to show more inflection in his reads. You're reading a book about creepy, spooky and paranormal related stories. Not the daily newspaper or speech at an office.
I'm not saying to go all spooky voice for 3-4 hours, but just try to shake up your narrations. It's easy to fall asleep to this read when it should be keeping me awake all night.
I would gladly recommend this audiobook.

Big Title, Tiny Book
This is a small collection of mediocre stories that are neither "horrifying" nor "baffling".
The prose is sloppily written with several grammatical errors and a few instances where the author seems to have a weak understanding of the word she is using.
Narration is equally mediocre with several glaring missteps in pronunciation and inattention to the period as a full stop.
Waste of time and money.

Describes different supernatural events.
The Author covers a variety of supernatural events as told by persons that experienced each event. She divides the events into categories and/or chapters that focus upon one specific event. Hauntings, EVPs, real world investigations, crimes that led to hauntings, and other phenomena are related in the narration with the author giving some explanations for the occurences. Several stories relate recent events; while others relate older material.
When I ordered this recording I had thought I was purchasing fiction crafted by the author. I was surprised to find the style was more like a reporter describing what is known about various occurences.
The narrator sounded a bit wooden and / or pedantic. I believe I would have enjoyed this book reading it myself rather than listening to it being read to me.

Sounds like a robot reading
I listened to a half hour and just had to stop. The reader sounds like a robot. The stories are read with no normal inflection, which might make him sound human and like you were listening to a good story. There is absolutely no effort made to pull you into the story as skilled performers can do. Complete bummer because I love a good ghost story.

awful narration
I love ghost stories, and this is probably a good collection but I fell asleep due to the narrators awful reading. He sounds like a child who is just learning to read, sounding out the words a syllable at a time, without proper inflection and even stopping and starting part way through sentences. It's so monotonous its hard to stay awake - listen to a sample before wasting your credit/cash.
