Bad Poet, Worse Driver

The laughs keep coming. Gertrude goes under cover disguised as a poet and tries to get a driver's license at the same time. Typical Gertrude, she is terrible at both. But, typical Gertrude, she solves the murder of three poets. I was gifted this from the author.

So Enjoyable

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and any opinions expressed herein are my own.

This is the third book in the Gertrude Gumshoe series. It is a standalone book - however, the joy in this series comes from the growth of Gertrude's character and her interactions with others. I highly recommend you start with the first book in this series "Introducing Gertrude Gumshoe."

I just can't get enough of feisty Gertrude. Her antics make me laugh out loud - getting her license; reciting poetry [one about her cat and the detective]; and of course, her relationship with Calvin. I love when she questions people and they ask who she is, her only response is "I'm Gertrude," as if she is known the world over and only has a first name like Cher or Adelle or Madonna. I absolutely enjoy this series and recommend it highly for anyone who wants a good laugh.

The narrator, Darlene Allen, is the same narrator for the entire series. She does a very good job narrating and embodies the quirkiness of Gertrude's character.

GERTRUDE to the rescue! LOL again!

If you are looking for a book that is going to get your mind off all the stuff in your life then you should give Robin Merrill's Gertrude series a try. Gertrude is an older woman that doesn't think she is that lives in a trailer park with a bunch of cats and clutter she calls her collections. Gertrude and her neighbor Calvin have a strange friendship where she likes to trick him into helping her solve crimes. You will laugh at the hilarious antics she gets into and manages to pull her friends into but you will also be amazed at how she somehow is able to twist everything around in her brain to solve crimes. I have listened to a few of the audio version of Ms. Merrill's Gertrude series and have to say they are a nice break from the seriousness of life. Darlene Allen does a wonderful job of bringing these stories to life and I intend to listen to more. I have also listened to other series of Ms. Merrill's and she is quite a fun author. I have also listened to Darlene Allen narrate other authors and this is how I discovered Ms. Merrill.
I received a free code from Audiobooks Unleashed to listen to this book on Audible. this review is my own honest opinion.

I love Gertrude!

Gertrude decides she needs another case to work on, so this time she looks to the big city to find one. Is there really a connection between the deaths that have recently occurred, or were they all accidents? Follow along as Gertrude participates in a poetry slam to try and find out the answers to her many questions.

entertaining

that story was adorable and entertaining. Gertrude reminds me of myself. always wanting the answers, not caring how I get them and assuming that certain people will be there when I need them...which they usually are. Gertrude may be wrong about who did it but she still solved the case. I say good for you Gertrude!!!

A great story with a fiesty senior sleuth!

This is a very original and humorous audio book! The main character is a spunky elderly woman, who certainly doesn't see age as a limiting factor. She solves murders and drags her friends and acquaintances along for the ride. The story is quirky and fun. The narrator does a good job with the different characters of varying ages and backgrounds. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Possibilities

The overall story premise was interesting. One comical scene of Gertrude driving backwards brought a smile to my face but really that's all I found funny in this proclaimed comical mystery. Gertrude, the elderly sleuth, believes there is a link between poetry readers deaths even though many look like an accident. A different narrator may have brought more humor tones; there were awkward pauses in the dialogue and at the end of chapters that had me checking my phone to ensure the audible app had not closed.

Don't call me ma'am.

With no crimes apparently occurring in her home town, Gertrude find a promising set of deaths in
Portland to inveztigate. Both were reported as accidents, but Gertrude knows better: the coincidence of both involving alcohol and following on from a poetry meeting is just too great. Besides, she wants to add another investigative case to her gumshoe reputation. And, of course, Calvin has to be there, too - she doesn't have her driving licence yet!

Another good fun story about the elderly self styled private eye: she's formidable even at a poetry reading. Again narrated by Darlene Allen, whose performance is good even if her delivery is slightly on the s!is side. She really seems to capture the pushy, unrepentant attitude of this lovable-from-a-distance, irritating old woman in pursuit of a Murder mystery

My thanks to the rights holder of the Gertrude, Gumshoe story series which, at my request, was freely gifted to me as complimentary copies via Audiobooks Unlimited, a division of Audiobook Boom. Great fun and the dreadful Gertrude grows on you.

Stage fright

I enjoyed this book. It is a fun light and easy mystery to follow along. This is book four but you don't need to have listened to them in order and all of them are a hoot, just like Gertrude. I love the characters, Gertrude is so hopeless, bossy, dramatic, blunt and yet you can't help but like her. She always manages to find a way to get what she wants, I do feel sorry for Calvin the sidekick and think he is another well crafted character, who else would let Gertrude take a driving test in there car?
Gertrude is bored and where looking through the newspaper she stumbles onto what she thinks could be two murders. The first problem is she is the only gumshoe who hasn't passed there driving test, yet. So enlists Calvin her fellow crime solving sidekick to drive. The second problem is both deaths seems to be connected to a poetry slam and Gertrude needs to go under cover to get close to question the suspects but first she needs to Google what a poetry slam is. Getting on stage proves to be no problem but coming up with a poem while under the big bright lights of the stage proves to be elusive just like unmasking the killer before they strike again. Can Gertrude and Calvin work out who the killer is or will they be booed off the stage?
I like the narrator she has to cover a wide range of ages to give each character there own voice, which she does beautifully.
