Publisher's summary

Filled with action, adventure, mystery, and historical detail, the Sackett saga is an unforgettable achievement by one of America's greatest storytellers. In Galloway, two brothers must struggle to survive in a wild and beautiful land to build themselves a ranch and a future.

Trouble was following Flagan Sackett with a vengeance. Captured and tortured by a band of Apaches, he had escaped into the rugged San Juan country, where he would try to stay alive until his brother Galloway could find him.

But the brothers were about to find worse trouble ahead. Their plan to establish a ranch angered the Dunn clan, who had decided that the vast range would be theirs alone. Now Galloway and Flagan would face an enemy who killed for sport, but as long as other Sacketts lived, they would not fight alone.

The Old West

This isn't one of the western authors iconic books, but in my opinion it's straight forward simplicity makes it one of his best. Flagan Sackett's escape from the Apache/ Ute makeshift tribal group mirror's several events that actually occurred during the 19th century. His ability to gather food on his own is a fascinating look at man's ability to survive. There are fistfights and gunfights that occur once he regains his strength and other members of the Sackett family have battles with the Dunn's as well. As always the biggest weakness in his books is a lame cookie cutter romance with a silly girl who finally gets her head on straight and marries our hero.
My dad and uncle read westerns so I began reading them as well. This was the sole author of the genre that I continued to read past my mid teens. It's not any sort of great writing; and though the author is credited with more than 100 books if you've read 10 or 12 of them you've read them all. They are formulaic and extremely predictable. His books are easy listens moving swiftly with plenty of action sequences, plus you can follow the stories with less than your full attention. A good listen if you have a nighttime drive ahead of you, or while puttering in the house, the garage or outside on your lawn.

Great Story

Louis L'Amour captures the essence of the fighting man so well and the humor that they exhibit in the toughest situations.

Outstanding L’Amour

Fantastic descriptions of the land and wonderful dialogue by the well developed characters. Louis L’Amour is the best western writer of this age.

One of my favorite Sackett books so far

One of my favorite Louis l’Amour books so far. Although I did feel like the ending was rather abrupt.

Galloway?

I don’t know why it is named after the brother that is rarely in the spotlight. His brother is generally the narrator. I so enjoy the quips, humor, and relationships. I love the historical references as to time, place, and are. Fun to look up these places on a map and see the progression of the families moving across the land.

I enjoyed the intricate descriptions as I could surely see it all vividly, even the fight scenes! Blow by blow I was right there with them!

On to the next one!!
