space opera with zombies

fast zombies at that. the story, characters were okay. against background of impeding alien doom. liked the narrator but overall story reminded me of the pulp paperbacks of the 80s. if you like it, you like it. if you don't, was only a quarter.

Narration was good but just couldn't connect

Narration was good but just couldn't connect with the characters. This story has everything i normally enjoy in a book so it should have been a slam dunk and i honestly can't put my finger on why it wasn't.

fun listen lots of adventure a great narration

The story is fast moving, not very technical but enough to be real. The character are well developed and realist. This protagonist does need to do a bit more to keep in shape but it does keep her very human. The tale is a sad one but loyalty and friendship shine through the dark. You will enjoy this story and especially enjoy the narrator

Brilliant🖤

Galactic Mercenaries galloped along, on its exciting, pithy and enjoyable course.

Lively performance and spot on narration

The writing and reading of this three book series made a winning combination.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntary leaving a review. I think it is worth the asking price.

Zombies in Space!

I got a great surprise when I started the Galactic Mercenaries Omnibus because I didn’t actually read the publisher’s summary before I got the book. It had an interesting cover and I like space operas, so sue me. So, imagine my surprise when I fall into an atypical plot all about undead plagues and zombie invasions. Sure, its got your aliens and their politics, intergalactic wars, and a ragtag assortment of interesting characters on a mercenary ship. But all the standard elements are well done and with the addition of the zombie space apocalypse, Galactic Mercenaries was so much more than just a space opera!

All three books in the Omnibus were pretty solid space opera fare, though I think the last book was my favorite. You do have to start to endure from a bit of predictability after getting into the plot, as Murphey’s law becomes one bitch of a cruel mistress for Jayde and her crew. Jayde is also pretty awful at being a mercenary -- she’s got a big heart and the tendency to play the part of a hero, so “do the right thing for free and get screwed over because of it” seemed to be a repeating theme throughout the books. Of course, with no crazy hijinks, the books would have been pretty boring, so perhaps its not all bad.

I really enjoyed getting to know each of the core characters. Each one was unique, with their own developing personality and backstories. We never got to fully see into all of their pasts, but what was there made the narrative all that more interesting. But on the flip side, I also got the feeling that every character who wasn’t part of the core crew was pretty much a one-dimensional red shirt. So, don’t get too attached to anyone new. But with the short nature of each story, I suppose it is hard to run with a large cast of characters.

Galactic Mercenaries is a fun series and definitely one I’d like to see continue on past its three novella run. I kind of felt like it ended just when it was getting good. Captain Jayde Thrin and the crew of the Determination are an interesting cast of characters and they deserve another story or two. A prequel story would be pretty great to really flesh out the characters.

Max Simshauser did a decent job with the narration and I really enjoyed the details that she put into her inflection, tone, and character voices. She did nice work creating believable male and female voices for the core characters and though not all the supporting cast was as unique, I enjoyed her performance.

Special thanks to Richard Fierce, who provided me with this book at my request.

Space Zombies

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

TLDR; Zombies in space, and a rag-tag crew has to save the universe.

Overall this is fairly standard Space Sci-Fi fare. You have a group of spacers that have a ship doing odd-jobs for cash to keep the ship up and running. Then disaster strikes they get pulled into a larger problem and have to try and save the universe. Not an exceptional version, but a fun listen none the less. If you enjoy that sort of standard Space Sci-Fi troupe then you'll enjoy this.

Fast paced adventure with entertaining characters

Galactic Mercenaries is an original take on the classic space mercenary story. Richard Fierce creates memorable characters and throws them into a situation not normally covered in Science Fiction space operas.
The story offers a unique look at some classic fantasy story lines while giving them a science fiction twist. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, Richard opens the other door and reveals a better direction. The hero is never out of trouble and it is fascinating to see how she gets out of it.
If you are looking for a fast-paced space adventure, this is for you. Highly entertaining read with enough twists to keep you turning the page.
The book is narrated by Max Simshauser who provides accents and tones for each character to provide an entertaining listening experience. Clear annunciation allows for easy comprehension.

3 great episodes

Engaging characters with both strengths and flaws
Running around the galaxy on crusade style missions without any real rules or notes about how the travel happens (but that’s not bad, it works)
Mercenaries with hearts of gold themes
Evil invading space aliens
Weird cults
Zombies (more or less)

All the ingredients of epic space opera — and a few more to spice it up!

It starts out fun, but gets dark fast

It's not just another zombie story. It has some twists and turns to it. The poor captain and crew just can't seem to get a lucky break.

One can never be too cautious these days.

As a young teenager, Jayde Turin had been the only survivor when her planet was attacked by alien pods releasing a virus which turned the humans into zombie like creatures they called Sleelers, or Dredges, in the military. Now an adult, she is captain of a small mercenary ship with a crew of four - and no money. Needing a new engine as well as fuel, they land on M44, a mining facility, take on an easy job for quick cash - and find themselves caught in a nightmare situation even worse than the one Jayde remembers from her chi!dhood. And their luck just keeps getting worse.

Three short stories, or episodes, of an ongoing tale about the shil, Determination, and her crew caught up in a dirty tricks war with another, alien, race. Each is written in the present tense which makes the action, and there is plenty of it, immediate and exciting. But it is also quite clipped, almost as if this were a first draft to be filled out later. Consequently, the characters are not fully formed and descriptions are minimal, offering a less than three dimensional experience. Dialogue, too, can be stilted, for example the expression, "I don't disagree," being used on more than one occasion by a character in time of stress rather than the more likely response of ' Fine,' or 'Okay,' or similar. However, the story is good, and with a refreshing difference.

Narrator, Max Simshauser, has a pleasant voice but reads fast, too fast to allow emotion to sleep through and further enliven the story. On the contrary, although her character voicing s are good and differentiated, and her reading well modulated, the reading speed flattens out the humanity but decreasing playback speed to .75 slurs her voice and is unsatisfactory. A pity as a good narration could really have lifted the book as a whole.

My thanks to the rights holder of Galactic Mercenaries Omnibus, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy of the book. Some editing is needed to removed repeated phrases and breath a greater humanity into the stories but they were definitely enjoyable, becoming increasingly interesting as the book progressed. I'd certainly continue to follow Jayde's adventures should any further stories be written and recommend this book to space opera fans as well as post apocalyptic zombie followers. It is a lightweight, fun series, easy to dip in and out.

Exciting And Fast Paced Zombie Space Adventure

I really enjoyed this excellent Space Adventure which unusually had zombies in it! The story really works well and it gets straight into the action from page one. The main character is Captain Jayde Thrin who leads a small crew running her cargo ship Determination, I enjoyed getting to know her and all of her crew.
The narration by Max Simshauser is top notch and she really draws you into the story.
I highly recommend this audio-book which I was given in exchange for an impertial and objective review.
