Publisher's Summary

In 1985, Stanley Kubrick encouraged Matthew Modine to keep a journal and take photographs while playing the lead role of Pvt. Joker - a combat correspondent - on the set of his Vietnam War film, Full Metal Jacket. In 2005, Modine published a limited edition book of his diary and photos which later became an interactive experience for the iPad. Now, with the Full Metal Jacket Diary audiobook, fans can listen to Modine as he performs his diary with sound effects and original music. This deeply immersive, first-hand account reveals what it was like to work with Stanley Kubrick, one of cinema's most enigmatic filmmakers.

Great

Matthew Modine's voice takes you on a personal journey through his struggle to become Private Joker, the difficulties and joys that accompanied his experience on and off the film set, while he shares some interesting reflections on war, politics, love, kubrick, fatherhood and, ultimately, life. Loved it.

Highly Recommend!

I love that Matthew Modine himself narrates his own work. The afterword especially shines a light on his humanity.

Fascinating Behind the Scenes Look

As a film critic, I have always been interested in evaluating how a movie makes me feel and how it compares to others. This journal, for the first time, has made me absolutely fascinated in the filmmaking process. That is, the way in which special effects are handled, the way scenes evolve and take shape over the course of a shoot, and the way actors/directors/crew interact when the cameras are not rolling.

This account of the history of FULL METAL JACKET also increased my reverence for Stanley Kubrick's talent (and convinced me that he was definitely a bit of a jerk, albeit a genius one, too). The film is a masterpiece and one of my favorites of all-time and learning about the details of how it was made gave me a lot of joy. This is a must-read for fans of the director or this film, and I will be eagerly seeking out stories like this about other favorite films of my own.

Merely taps the surface.

What about Matthew Modine’s performance did you like?

Modine is a fine actor and reads it well. I didn't like all the chapter breaks that told you where you were, what date, etc. They were too frequent, interrupted the flow.

It was ok

The stories were nice but the format and editing of the audio is odd. It was not like anything else that I have read.

Breathtaking.

Wow. The greatest diary ever said from pen to paper. Astonishing delivery by Matthew Modine, you felt you were actually there and could imagine it in you head. Powerful stuff.

War is Hell

And apparently so is working for someone the one and only Stanley Kubrick. What a looney fella.

Full Metal Jacket

I enjoyed every minute reading and listening as I also own a limited edition Full Metal Jacket hard cover book. The way Matt reads it has you focused on every word. I loved the movie and this book.

Gripping, Interesting, & Important Story

A fascinating account that any fan or follower of actor Matthew Modine, Stanley Kubrick, and/or the FMJ film MUST read or listen to. You get a real, raw behind the scenes unlike most films (past or present) that details the entire process, while exploring the lives of Modine and those around him. The background sound effects for the audio book alone add another dimension of realism to it all...I can almost taste and smell the blood, sweat, and tears, along with an undercurrent of emotional & societal psychology that remains relevant to today's world. Highly recommend to anyone interested.

A great insight into a great film.

Takes you deep inside the making of FMJ and a slight glimpse into Kubrick’s mind. That glimpse alone is worth it.

Great Insights ....

Into the mind of a master filmmaker and a must for Kubrick obsessives ( like me )

‘Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target no one else can see’

Arthur Schopenhauer

Stanley fell firmly into the latter.

Full Strait Jacket

Loved this one. Filled with rigorous filmmaking insights from the narrator himself. A Kubrickian treat.
