Publisher's summary

Discover the stories of 12 women who heard the call to settle the West and who came from all points of the globe to begin their journeys.

As a slave Clara watched helplessly as her husband and children were sold, only to be reunited with her youngest daughter as a free woman six decades later.

As a young girl, Charlotte hid her gender to escape a life of poverty and became the greatest stagecoach driver who ever lived.

As a Native American, Gertrude fought to give her people a voice and to educate leaders about the ways and importance of America's native people.

These are gripping miniature dramas of good-hearted women, selfless providers, courageous immigrants and migrants, and women with skills too innumerable to list. Many were crusaders for social justice and women's rights. All endured hardships, overcame obstacles, broke barriers, and changed the world. The author ties the stories of these pioneer women to the experiences of women today with the hope that they will be inspired to live boldly and bravely and to fill their own lives with vision, faith, and fortitude. To live with grit.

Courageous and tenacious women!

Frontier Grit
The Unlikely True Stories of Daring Pioneer Women
By: Marianne Monson
Narrated by: Caroline Shaffer
This is a remarkable collection of strong women who, each in their own way, conquered the west and the barriers that was placed in front of them with courage and tenacious gumption. It tells of 12 women from different walks of life, totally different stories, but all very intriguing and interesting! This was a free listen with Audible Plus! Recommend it highly!
Terrific narration also!

I Love This Book!!!!!!

I've been researching strong women for decades, particularly women during pioneer times and places in anticipation of writing a book about my female ancestors. This book is right at the top of "the best" of books for both my research and my entertainment. The voice is compelling, the information fascinating, and although I thought I was well informed on the subject, these women were new to me. What a fabulous book for anyone interested in learning about the diversity of strengths to be found in both the gender as a whole, and the women she individually describes. I was sorry when I came to the end of the book and could have listened to many more of these true stories. Oh! And that is another thing absolutely and completely top-notch. She is 100% citable in all aspects of her reporting. If she has no "proof," she says so. But 98% of the stories are 100% proven by the vast and varied research she has done on each woman. Bravo!

Narrator ruins this book.

I have only listened to a couple of chapters so far. Although the stories of these women have the potential to be humorous, harrowing and fascinating ... any chance of my being captivated is out the window due to the robotic, monotone voice of the narrator. It sounds almost computer-generated, similar to what you hear on some Tik-Tok videos. I'm not sure I can actually endure listening to several more hours of this, unless my goal is to fall into a deep sleep. Very disappointing, I was actually looking forward to some empowering tales of sassy ladies. They may be in there somewhere, but not sure I'll make it! Darn.

So many wonderful women’s stories of times long ago

A great read! Narrated by Caroline Shaffer, who did a wonderful job. Loved her voice and even her accents.
The pioneer grit these wonderful ladies had during each of their stories was very inspiring and moving. Sometimes, I felt my eyes welling up with tears. The strength and courage these women had and the grit to get through what seemed like an endless oppression in their time was eye-opening indeed.

An agenda book

The stories are interesting, but it’s another book where the author has to put in her feminist agenda.

Grit & determination won the west!

Written through many viewpoints, female in nature, this book explores how women of grit & tenacity bought their freedom, won the vote, excelled a man's job, & made a difference. The author tackles each subject with an understanding of the times & challenges us to be our better selves. Very well written & narrated. Recommend!

Great Book!

I loved the book, it was inspirational. Each chapter was about a different woman. I wish however the chapters were labeled with their names.
