Publisher's Summary

Spring has come at last with cheerful daffodils and plump crocus blooms, and Poppy is hoping that the new season will magically resurrect the cottage garden nursery she's inherited. But with her stock failing to grow and a mysterious "peeping Tom" stalking the village, she's got her gardening gloves full...and that's even before her visit to the local doctor ends with her stumbling on a dead body! Then, her friend and neighbour - crime author Nick Forrest - suddenly finds himself the top suspect, and a missing garden gnome is the only lead in the case. Determined to find the real killer, Poppy sets out to do some horticultural sleuthing - helped by eccentric old inventor Bertie and a posse of nosy villagers. All she finds, however, are more questions. Was the murder simply a "crime of passion", or was it something more sinister? Is there a link to the recent spate of creepy lingerie thefts in the village? And could the naughty ginger tomcat Oren be the key to solving the mystery? As she grapples with spindly seedlings and cryptic clues, Poppy discovers that even a sleepy English village can be a hotbed of deceit and death....

Best yet!!

I have to say that I've loved this series since book 1,but this one is my favorite.
Oren and his shenanigans are laugh out loud funny in this story and is absolutely my favorite character. It also seems as if we are going to start seeing some romance between Poppy and Nick. In this story the actual murderer shocked me and I was guessing the entire time.
I'm already eagerly waiting for the next story.

Another fun cozy mystery

I really like the story and have read every one of H Y Hanna’s books. They are great fun and well written. The only complaint I have in this book the 4th in the series, is that Poppy’s character needs to evolve more. She is still struggling with her business and nearly destitute, she has no love interest just a flirty relationship with Nick, and no close friends her age. Her gardening skills never improve yet she is running a nursery. And her fathers mystery is never solved only mentioned at the end. I love Pearl Hewitts performance and will continue reading Hanna’s books but hope to see Poppy’s character mature.

Charmed again

I am a fan of H.Y. Hanna's cozy series, and listening to them is my preferred format, because Pearl Hewitt voices them so well. As always, the charm of the setting is the primary attraction for me. English villages are a familiar setting in many cozies, for just that reason. If you are a homemaker and gardener, as I am, the fantasy setting of a cottage garden as the home and business of the protagonist, is a wonderful escape to favorite daydream haunts.

These books never skimp on the mystery plot, though. There are always a number of likely perpetrators and motives to follow. The logic is sound and the happenstance of clue discovery is believable in the context of characters and setting.

Finally, there is always a good dose of humor. Cat lovers will particularly enjoy the recurrent involvement of the mischievous neighbor cat, and the eccentric professor-inventor always provides funny interludes. This story in the ongoing series is light on romance, compared to the others, but perhaps I just feel that way because I would have liked more interaction between Poppy and the attractive author/ex-detective.

I can't like this character :(

I really really enjoy this author's books. But I just can't with this character anymore. I can see her a out to make every stupid mistake and it makes me want to scream. I know next to nothing about plants and even I know you can't leave seedlings out overnight ...in spring...in England! Bring them out in the sun but why not put them back overnight?? I get it, part of the plot is that she doesn't know what she's doing....but my God - learn!!! Take a night class on marketing or something!! I know I know, I sound nuts. But this character drives me crazy!!!!! Also, what kind of sociopath could watch a video of someone getting killed and not be impacted...and then watch it over and over. I thought by now that this character would slowly acquire brains at some point and I'm done waiting. Also, some scenes are just really hard to believe.

Earns 5+/5 Garden Gnomes…Engaging, Clever Favorite!

Bloomin’ Fun! In one of my favorite series, an English Cottage Garden Mystery, H.Y. Hanna has penned a well-developed and cleverly titled fifth mystery, “Fronds and Enemies.” With a Neighborhood Watch fanatic, missing undergarments, an “Auricula” club, and a couple of murders, it is a delightful mystery, fun challenge for any amateur detective, and an “Oh, wow!” ending and tying up of some of the book’s loose ends. Poppy struggles to get enough inventory to make a success of her garden nursery, and dealing with a rash, hazard of working around thorny flora, she is told to drop everything and visit the village GP. There she meets some interesting people, gets up close and personal with a toddler, and hears loads of gossip about the handsome Dr. Seymour, who she finds is also an avid gardener and president of the local Oxfordshire Auricula Club. His wife, however, is quiet brash and demanding, and very critical about her husband’s young practice manager Yvonne. So, when Poppy, retracing her steps to locate a lost necklace, happens upon the bludgeoned body of the young Yvonne, it seems a “cut and dry” investigation. But nothing is easy peasy in the Cotswolds with peeping Toms, snooping Sallys, inventive miracle grow, and even Nick Forest, Poppy’s hunky neighbor, has his own tangles with the tabloid press and local law enforcement. Of course, when you choose to engage in H.Y. Hanna’s fantastic work with the audio version, you are in for a marvelous treat with the voice artistry of Pearl Hewitt doing the narration. Her pleasant narration includes variations on British dialects that portray well tone and emotions, age and gender, feline machinations, and various delightful, quirky, and sinister personalities. All in all…entertaining, compelling, a few giggles for fun, and an entertaining, above and beyond narration!

Put down the potted plant and enjoy a good book

There is something about sitting back in the sunshine and having a story read to you, especially when it's a great story. Well look no further this is the book for you and you might even get away with claiming its research to help the garden, okay maybe not but it is fun. I loved this book. I have really been enjoying The English Cottage Garden Mysteries, as it is so unusual for a book to be set in England and the author really gives you a sense of what village life is like. However I think this is my favourite book so far and that is mainly because Oren (the cat) plays such a big part in the story, all of H.Y Hanna books contains animals but Oren has certainly stolen my heart with all his high jinx and mischief making. The mystery was good and I was torn between two suspects as to who the actual killer was, although I did get to one of the motives a lot quicker than Poppy did. The other thing I like about the series is the inexperience of Poppy as a garden, where as every other cozy mystery is set around a coffee shops or food, to find one that introduced you to the love of gardening is fun and will have you laughing out loud at the the antics of the loveable Oren.
When Poppy scratches her arm on a rose bush she has no idea that a quick visit to the doctors surgery means that she finds herself involved in another murder investigation. The doctor's practice manager is found dead the day after and with gossip of a stalker roaming the village it is not long before the police descend on mass to the quiet little town. Poppy's friend and contact on the police force is taken off the case when the evidence starts to point to there mutual friend and Poppy's neighbour, the crime write Nick. Knowing that Nick isn't involved Poppy and eccentric Bertie run there own investigation to clear his name. But just who is the killer and will they be able to find them before the killer feels the need to strike again?
Pearl Hewitt is this author's narrator of choice and there is a good reason why. With her clear speaking voice, great character voices and interesting cat meow's it makes you feel like you are part of the story.

Another fabulous visit to Hollyhock Cottage

Love this series of Cozy Mysteries. Always very entertaining, and with lots of typically English eccentric, larger than life characters, who you can picture very clearly! And all the best books have cats in them too!! :-)

Pearl Hewitt's "voicing" of Oren, the big ginger tom cat in this series, is clearly extremely accurate, as our 4 cats prick up their ears and start looking for a feline interloper every time Oren "speaks". :-D

Already looking forward to the next book!
