Good but Still Not Great

Though the switch to Germany and it's plethora of tales has helped restore the faith in this series I lost when Steadfast came out, there's still something missing. The story is entertaining and the characters are interesting, but the flow is almost too smooth. When the final conflict came it was somewhat predictable, and the only "surprise" at the end was actually rather underwhelming.

Overall, it's worth reading as part of the series. But it's not going to be the book that makes your week, or the one that keeps you awake at night to see how the chapter ends. if you like the series then it's an enjoyable listen to pass the time. Otherwise all that can be said about it is that it's an interesting adaptation of Rapunzel, as well as an interesting look into certain aspects of German culture that aren't often discussed.

Favorite in the Elemental masters series

What did you love best about From a High Tower?

From a High Tower isn't an obvious love story. I very much liked the independent, though somewhat unsure, protagonist. Also the old time wild west traveling show was a great addition.

What other book might you compare From a High Tower to and why?

hard to say, it's Rapunzel meets an old west dime novel

Have you listened to any of Jennifer Van Dyck’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Storm Born: Dark Swan, but I much preferred this story. Jennifer Van Dyck is a wonderful voice actress either way

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

the end scene of Giselle chasing Rosa around in mock anger

Thoroughly enjoyable

This is a road trip story, so it progresses in a rambling sort of way, with a lot of day to day detail and entertaining episodes. There's a bit of more focused plot at the end, for a satisfying finish, but mainly, it's a road trip.

Jennifer Van Duck does a good job with all the many voices and accents.

Always up for Mercedes Lackey books

I have been a fan of the Elemental Series since I started reading them and haven't missed one yet. No great words of wisdom from me, just a general like of this book. Performance was good, story was enjoyable, a twist on the Rapunzel theme, and basically recommended for anyone who likes light reading.

Entertaining Story

Great story. Narration was good except for mispronunciation of most of the German words. That was distracting.

Good new entry

If you liked the recent elemental masters book about Rosamund, you'll enjoy this one too, though she isn't as much the star. It's decently written, pretty entertaining, and one of my favourites in this series.

five stars!!

Mercedes Lackey does it again! I really enjoy her Elemental Masters series. I truly enjoy everything that I've read that she's written, and Elemental Masters is just the most recent in a long line of series that are delightful and well-rounded. a complete story, one that doesn't leave you scratching your head at the end and going 'huh'? I can't wait to read the next book in this series! What a treat!!

If her bullets don't get ya, her elementals will..

While I didn't like this story as much as Blood Red, its still a great addition to the series. Taken from her poor family, Giselle is raised alone by her magician foster mother. Things take a dark turn one day when a man gets into the tower and tries to force himself on her. Deciding she needs to learn to defend herself, her foster mother sends her to be raised at a lodge where she can receive better training. Her journey eventually leads her to a traveling Wild West show, where she picks up work as a sharpshooter. In addition to meeting a face familiar to the audience, Giselle faces several dangers along the way, including one she'd thought long past. One thing I particularly liked is how this book regularly references a real-life author named Karl May, a man who was famous for writing Westerns but had obviously never seen it for himself. I don't think the narrator is as good as the last one, but she's perfectly fine. What I will say is that this series could certainly use more stories like this one in it.

Mercedes Lackey thru and thru!!

I love all of Mercedes Lackey's books. She's an awesome writer! From a High Tower is book 10 in the Elemental Masters series which if you've been following it you will know is one of her more creative series. It's roughly structured around the story of Rapunzel but has the "Lackey touch" added and swirled thru out it making it a whole different story. As I said at the beginning I love and adore Mercedes Lackey books and I firmly believe if you read a few you will too! Enjoy and happy reading! 😉
