Publisher's summary

Writer William Adler and jazz musician Bob Dorough on this archive edition of Fresh Air. Adler's first book, Land of Opportunity: One Family's Quest for the American Dream in the Age of Crack, tells the story of the Chambers brothers. The brothers moved to Detroit from Mississippi in the mid-'80s in search of economic freedom and found it by setting up the biggest drug business in the city. It was run like a Fortune 500 company with quality control, discounts, employee bonuses and a dress code. William Ferris calls the book a "chilling view o the urban drug scene and the black experience that should be read by every American." Musician Bob Dorough was the musical director of the 1970s educational TV series, School House Rock and composer of the popular song "Three is a Magic Number." (Original Broadcast Dates: May 3, 1995 and May 9, 1996)
