What happened to Jacques Gaillard? The brilliant teacher at the École Nationale d’Administration, who trained some of France’s best and brightest as future prime ministers and presidents, vanished ten years ago, presumably from Paris. This ten-year-old mystery inspires a bet—one that Enzo Macleod, a biologist teaching in Toulouse, France, instead of pursuing a brilliant career in forensics back home in Scotland, can ill afford to lose.

Peter Forbes' narration transforms this book
I have enjoyed most of the Peter May books on audible - but only with decent narration. This was NOT the case for the first in the Enzo series (Dry Bones, with truly awful narration by Simon Vance). Thankfully the tie-up between May and Forbes is gradually making more of his titles great listens. This is one of the latest to be re-recorded - hooray!
The book itself is another good piece of detective work for the big Scottish forensic investigator, this time mainly on an island near Lorient in Southern Brittany. I reckon it will keep most listeners entertained - and probably guessing right to the end. I now look forward to Peter Forbes narrations of the remainder of the series.

Run of the mill
At least this book differed a bit from previous Enzo books. Enzo only gets hit over the head once and doesn’t get laid at all (though he almost does) . Furthermore, there is no Soppy Sophie, buff Bertrand, Nicole or Kirsty. There is however the impossibly dreary Charlotte who is supposed to be a clinical psychologist but has no insight into her own bizarre behaviour and indeed appears to be an attention seeking sociopath in her own right.
As for the story it’s ok though pedestrian.
Obviously one needs to read the series to find out if Charlotte gets to diagnose Enzo’s dementia brought on by repeated blows to the head. Cirrhosis is also possible comorbidity. Finally, he really does need to loose the ponytail.

Another cracking listen - hooked
Can’t stop myself buying and listening to these books. Excellent in all ways. Peter Forbes gives another 5* performance and clever cold case story. Nice not to have the daughters and Nicole appear this time. Was getting a bit formulaic. So Enzo can pull it off alone! Have already bought the next one in the series.

Ahhh, the two Peters. If you don't love the combination of these two men, you are very hard to please. It's difficult to imagine anyone other than Peter Forbes narrating Peter May's books. If you follow Enzo Macleod, you will love this book. Fast moving. A real page turner that will keep you guessing until the end.
