Publisher's summary

The first interstellar war, a generation ago, left humanity enslaved. Now humans fight in the armies of their masters to save themselves from annihilation.

At least that's what the propaganda insists is true. What the layers of lies keep hidden is how badly the new war is going for the people of earth.

Now it's Dylan Kane's turn to blast into the heavens and join the battle, but what his masters don't know is that by putting a weapon in his hands, they're giving him the key to unlocking his hopes of freedom.

When the railgun slugs are tearing through his ship and the vacuum is sucking the life out of his wounded friends, will Dylan's years of repressed rage turn into enough bravery to make his dream come true?

Decent SciFi if you can ignore the author defending inappropriate relationships.

I enjoyed the overall storyline, but having to listen to multiple characters regularly defending inappropriately aged relationships is very off putting.

why the hell.

between Phil and the alien. trying to be slick switching the gender of the alien to a girl. not fooling anybody calling it Nick than to a girl. when he wants to basically have sex with a alien. than the main character perverted thoughts constantly about a underage girl. which I skip passed now. it's gross and creepy. other than that good story. I got to the part the creepy thirty something year old man has sex with a barely legal girl. It's gross. I'm probably not listening to the rest of these.

The weakest book so far

I really like the series but this book was the most mundane so far.
It felt like a lot happened, while at the same time nothing happened.
I’m hoping the next book gets back on track or they could loose me.

It could be so much better.

As far as sci-fi goes, it’s unimaginative and juvenile at best. I’d place this one in the action genre, because there is zero science going on.

The story is just not good. Wanted to give it a chance, but no.

I really want this series to be good..

...it just does not seem to be happening. They've been good for listening to as I go about my day or chores, because I do not need to pay super-close attention to them. They are rather formulaic with no real twists, turns, or surprises. I can't give up on a series once I start though. Two more books to make the fireworks happen!

still listening

I've gotten more into the story as it goes. Bobby Adair does a pretty good job. Greg Tremblay's excellent neration helps bring the story to life.

meh

i liked it, but starting to blend together. theres no "big payoff". the love story is a bit boring- a bratty teenager demonstrating exactly why there are such things as "legal age". and the science is above my head a bit. its fun though.

Good not great

The overall story is interesting, as in the arc of the action is interesting.

However the character development is severely lacking. For example, the main character takes a huge step forward in a personal relationship and the regulate it to a few paragraphs. They don’t build out character development. The author could really take their time and fill out the characters story, not every page needs to be riddled with action. Action is entertaining, but it is a lot more impactful if you have a strong tie to the characters. Which we don’t die to lack of character development.
