I've watched many film versions of the story. but I've never read the book. It was better than I thought it would be. A true classic in every sense. I can never watch another Frankenstein movie without comparing it to the book. I will always love the Boris Karloff movies, but I will always hold Mary Shelly's book in high esteem.

The Original Frankenstein.

My rating is more reflective of the narration than the story itself. I went for this recording because I wanted the earlier version of the book. While I did enjoy the story as much as I anticipated, that was significantly undercut by Flo Gibson's narration. She had an odd, monotonous cadence, and barely distinguished between the different characters.

Frankenstein (1918) - narrated by Flo Gibson

This is an audio version of the original 1818 text which has more controversial material than the original. It is fantastically narrated by Flo Gibson. In all honesty, she almost does the male voices better than the female voices. She is easy to listen to, and draws you into this tragic classic.

A wonderful story...

It's hard to believe "Frankenstein" came out of the same world that produced Jane Austen, but it was published in 1818, the year after Jane Austen died. It's a grim, bloody, grave-worm-infested story, a haunting Romantic ode to the quest for knowledge.

What's even more surprising about the recording is that Flo Gibson is the narrator. She is one of my favorites, mostly from her recordings of Jane Austen, and her vocal range continues to astonish me. The hero being Swiss, and his native language being French, the bulk of the narration is in English with a slight French accent. Unless you insist that an ostensibly "male" narrator be voiced by a male, you will be hard-pressed to find a better reading of this novel.

Gripping

The narrator was dreadful. In her flat, gossipy voice it was as if she was trying to read this book as fast as she could so she could get back to watching Coronation Street.

Classic tale, dreadful narration
