Publisher's Summary

Charged with drama and beauty, this memorable collection by a master storyteller weaves a magical world of possibility and power from female myths of physical renewal, creation and change. It is an extraordinary immersion into the bodies and voices, mindscapes and landscapes, of the shapeshifting women of our native folklore.

Drawing on myth and fairy tales found across Europe from Croatia to Sweden, Ireland to Russia, Sharon Blackie brings to life women's remarkable ability to transform themselves in the face of seemingly impossible circumstances. These stories are about coming to terms with our animal natures, exploring the ways in which we might renegotiate our fractured relationship with the natural world and uncovering the wildness and wilderness within.

Critic Reviews

"A deeply evocative and haunting collection... Part rally cry, part warning, part manifesto and all parts enchanting, Sharon Blackie's Foxfire, Wolfskin is a deeply evocative and haunting collection. I want to press this powerful book into the hands of everyone I know and say listen." (Holly Ringland, author of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart)

Step into the Otherworld and enjoy

The only thing missing from these stories was the fire in which we all set around and hear a retelling of lost stories. I lost count of the times I laughed out loud, especially meeting Babs. I will listen to this over and over for years to come and pray one day I get to become the Callioch myself.

Loved these stories ❤

Although I've always loved tales like this and have heard many from grandma to me now being 38, these I thoroughly enjoyed for their difference not just by words but opinions too, love anything that tells of free woman and empowerment for them as we have shunned and silenced quite enough, why should not now shout and display ourselves for all we are worth. Very good narrative, easy to understand and follow, not too long but just right for an enjoyable collection.

Skin Deep

Dr Blackie casts her magic of prose, poetry and re-imaginging and sets free in our imagination how the world of there and here could be. Laugh, cry and rejoice with her in the way stories can be relevant today as we search for meaning, and ways to respect nature , our own nature and be natural.
Narrated with authentic voices so that the stories emerge with wit and a twist.

I loved this listen. Just the right balance of regional accents and well paced reading to set off an evocative collection of stories. One I will listen to again and again

Captivating Fairytale Retellings but so much more!

I absolutely loved this book of short stories by Blackie. They are marvellous, lyrical retellings of old myths and fairytales with clever twists and sudden turns and always shot through with deep abiding wisdom and this quiet, yet feral keening that calls us back to our wild woman selves. Truly captivating.

These stories are perfect for a quiet Autumn afternoon or a long Winter's night. If you are lucky enough to listen to the audio version, you will have the added delight of hearing the many accented voices of the tales - Scottish, Irish, Welsh, English - all female, all fierce and passionate story-tellers - and that is a joy too.

Can't recommend this book highly enough.
