Publisher's summary

A world fallen under a plague of seven billion walking dead. A tiny island nation the last refuge of the living. One team of the world's most elite special operators. The dead, these heroes, humanity's last hope, all have...Arisen.

When the Zombie Apocalypse came, one country had shut down its borders in response to a major terrorist attack. Now Fortress Britain is the last bastion of the living with 50 million beleaguered survivors facing down a world of 7 billion animated corpses. And when civilization fell, one international team of supremely elite special operators was being assembled for a nearly impossible mission, deployed out of the SAS barracks at Hereford. Supremely trained and armed, always the most skilled, resolved, and unstoppable amongst us, now the commandos of Alpha team are humanity's last best hope for survival. Searching through the detritus of fallen Europe, scavenging pharmaceutical labs for clues to a vaccine that might bring humanity back from the brink, now they are tasked with one last desperate operation. They must cross the Atlantic aboard the world's only remaining supercarrier, insert by air into the very middle of a dead continent, and then fight their way on foot through a city of 3 million ravening dead guys. But these Zulus will not be like any zombies they have ever fought before....

Why Half A Book?

Any additional comments?

I'd like at least 10 hours out of a book. Combine 3 of Fuchs books and you'd feel like you're getting your money's worth. The story is great, but I don't like burning a full credit for a novella.

Must Have More

Every book I have ever purchased narrated by RC Bray has been a winner!

This one is a cracker! I gave the zombie genre a break for a couple of purchases and I was looking for a good old fashion action bash'em crash'em style story, and boy did I hit the jackpot with this one.

The narration is excellent. The perfect speed to listen to for me was 1.25x speed. Which leads me to my biggest gripe with this one. It was too short, just over 5 hours in length, and even though I think Bray is one of the best narrators around, he is not exactly fast. So when you speed it up just a tad, the listening time is even shorter! This next book in the series should have been combined with this one! So in reality this one has been one of the most expensive in the genre per minute to listen too. I'm not so sure I am happy with that fact.

Ok with my gripes aside. I can honestly say this is one of the best in this genre

Story Fragment, No Depth

Don't expect a novel. If you do, you will be disappointed.

Expect, instead, an extended set-up piece for some future novel. Here, you will face a bit of plot background (which is told, not shown) as well as lots of fawning praise for special forces troops and highly detailed reverence for military equipment. Character development is obviously low priority; we learn very little about any character and, as a result, have a hard time caring about them.

This book does a masterful job of demonstrating why plot alone is not enough to create a good novel. If we care about the people, we will naturally care about the plot. The reverse isn't necessarily true and is certainly not true in Fortress Britain.

The only good news here? At least this novel fragment is brief; you won't need to spend too long with this testosterone-mad paean to soldiers and their weapons to conclude that it is not worth your time.

Spec Ops VS the Dead

Any additional comments?

This entire series is excellent! I listened to all of them within a few days and found it hard to turn off. Very well written and performed. The main characters are military Spec Ops types and Fuchs' has either been there or done his research well. One of the great things about the story is that even though these guys (and girls) are tough, trained and well armed they are still almost outmatched by the undead. Nobody is safe as they struggle to stay a half step ahead of the zombie hoardes, not to mention all the other pitfalls of post apocalypse civilization (supplies running low, fuel & ammo scarce, equipment failing, buildings structurally unsound). The anxiety and intensity level is off the chart and it is a non stop fight for survival. If these Spec Ops types are getting their asses kicked like this none of us regular Joe's would have a chance!

Tom Clancy could not write a better Military vs Zombie series. The only downside will be for readers with no military background. There are a lot of acronymns and references that only military types will get. But, even then, Fuchs explains what needs to be understood without boring the those of us who get it.

Last note - if you like "The Remaining" series you will love this.

One Bad Ass Zombie book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I love zombie books and RC Bray makes every character sound like he could rip off your head.

What did you like best about this story?

That the special forces troops were in search of the cure.

What about R. C. Bray’s performance did you like?

R.C. Bray is my Favorite narrator. I listen to everything he reads and he makes the characters come to life and does such a wonderful job!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! finished it in 3 days.

Any additional comments?

If you like this book listen to the Mountain Man series by Keith C. Blackmore. It is also narrated by R.C. Bray.

Not bad if you have money to burn

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This is a first. The story is ok, nothing fantasitic like WWZ was but still an enjoyable romp. My biggest complaint is the length. Each book feels more like a short stories than a "BOOK". The author has taken a book and cut it into sections to sell each as a full book, they are certainly not. The books are only 4-5 hours, they get more money out you this way. So if you have money to burn and don't mind tossing what I think will end up $100 or more on what should be a single book, go for it. Absolutely insulting.

Great book!

Loved it. My only critique is that the book wasn't longer. I couldn't stop listening!

Great Military Zombie Story

Good story and narration. I've listened to a lot of zombie books and this one ranks right up there with the best - I really like the military point of view as well. The only problem I have is that the books are really short. However, I can't wait for the 3rd book to drop on the 19th.
