Publisher's Summary

Forgotten secrets. Forgotten lies. A family legacy...A determined killer.

On the outskirts of Singing River, Wyoming, a couple dies in a fire that ravages their remote mountain home. Everyone believes it’s a tragic accident - except FBI profiler Riley Lambert. She isn’t convinced, and neither is her fiancé, ex-Navy SEAL turned sheriff, Thayne Blackwood. When they discover that the couple’s daughter is missing, Riley’s dark memories of her own sister’s kidnapping ratchet up the urgency to find the girl - before it’s too late.

Racing through a maze of deceit and a buried past, the pair find themselves under attack from an unknown assailant. Dodging danger, they follow a tangled web of clues pointing to a forgotten secret that Thayne’s Alzheimer’s-stricken grandmother holds dear. But when their deadly investigation veers too close to home and brings a twisted killer to Riley’s and Thayne’s doorsteps, can they save those they love and stop the murderer before time runs out?

unbearable.

Beware of books "performed" rather than read. wannabe actress, so awful, so over acted, it was painful. I forced myself to keep listening, but it was torture.

Overly Romantic at times

Overall, this is a good mystery story, but mixing in the lines of a cheesy romance novel didn't always work well for me. The narrator was waaay too dramatic all the time in her expression.. So much so that I almost gave up listening to this book because I didn't think I could stand the way she dramatized every line. But I got hooked enough by the story that I decided to put up with it, and found myself repeating the most obnoxious lines in a good narrator's tone just to make it tolerable. The mystery actually has several branches that kept you wondering and trying to fit them together. The conclusion is good, but a little bit vague and asks you to put it all together from just a few sentences here and there in the last few chapters. That's better than an ending that wraps everything up in a neat little bow, but somehow it leaves you a little dissatisfied. The writing is basically good except for the long-drawn out back and forth romance between the two main characters and the often times cheesy dialogue inserted in the midst of the story. But I must admit that perhaps if I was reading this instead of listening to it from this narrator, it might not have seemed that way. And I challenge anyone reading this to figure out who the ultimate bad guy is!

couldn't get past the narrator

I can't even say if the story is good but since I love this author normally I'll give it 4. but this narrator just can't do make voices and was just annoying to me. I tried several times but couldn't finish.

Ranchers don't sound like this.

Narration was poor - not "ranchlike" accent. Story was sluggish and redundant at times.

Satisfying, with a few negatives

I like the amount of drama and action. The action never made me sit on the edge of my seat, but I definitely wanted to follow along and see how things progressed. The main characters were all likeable, and there was suitable compassion for those who had their problems.

The negatives are two:
1) the narrator was weird. Too much push and whining was put into the dialogue given characters who knew how to be calm and quiet and solid during dangerous (an agent, and a special ops soldier doing local sheriff duty) and

Perini had everyone from age 12 and up, over both books, saying “it’s my fault, so and so would have loved/such and such crime would not have happened/ etc and so forth”. It might just have been an odd quirk except that the two people who should have understood that sometimes you can’t do anything’s differently, can’t save people, said it the most. All the self-condemnation was a bit much.

Worth listening, and prob worth two credits, though I was lucky enough to be able to listen to them in Audible Plus.

Emotional, Suspenseful

I love Robin Perinis' work. All of it. the series with Alzheimers is so heartwrenching and so relatable. All dealt within the confines of this remarkable, suspense novel. Strong female FBI, strong ex seal, now the sheriff. Murder, mystery and family. Well done.

A Superb Book!!

Another hit I love the love between Thayne and Riley. Also, how they love helping other people. This book was just like the first one a great storyline with a twisted ending.
