In light of how Joshua first felt about Mallory, it made my heart warm to see the change in him. He wasn’t looking for the worst anymore but seeing her with compassion and kindness. His strong persona was magnified in the manner with which he initially talked to Mallory, trying to breakthrough her walls. She had paid a high price for a single error made in the moments of despair and drunkenness. It didn’t matter that her home life was a nightmare and she felt she had nowhere to go. The incident occurred and now she had to pay. Overcoming the stigma that people are attributed, knowingly or not, when they are a single parent is a difficult position to find oneself. Mallory had had to do literally everything by herself for herself and Caleb for over two years. Not all single parents are graced with the blessing of meeting someone as gracious, generous and compassionate, as Paradox. Someone who brought integrity and overwhelming love for both she and Caleb. What a blessing! It melted my heart when he brought Jesus into the daily life of Caleb by teaching him how to say his evening prayers. Paradox has strong Christian beliefs, exemplified by his integrity, actions and fair treatment of people. He was not hesitant to point
out to another when he felt they had made an error in their actions. I thought that Joshua and Mallory made such a lovely couple and I was so glad when he separated from the military to come home and stay. Fly Boys was turning into a large organization. Joshua‘s interplay with Caleb was precious and so touching for a macho type guy. It seems that they were all set up to have a wonderful life together. As a sidenote, I also have to admit, as much as I hate a virtual narrator, I think that when Caleb’s voice was performed for his dialogue, it was absolutely outstanding. It made you want to hug that little toddler and squeeze him just to see if he would talk some more! Just an additional note, the cover of the book made Joshua look like a GQ model, very handsome!
