Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. For Meredith Gale, ending her life seems like her only choice, and that choice is the reason she’s dangling by her fingertips from a bridge high above the freezing water of the San Francisco Bay. But someone or some thing has other plans for Meredith, and as her fingers slip from the cold steel of the bridge, a disembodied voice asks her a simple question: “Candidate 13: Do you wish to be saved?” Realizing her mistake too late, Meredith screams “Yes!” and instantly finds herself transported to a mysterious island, alongside hundreds of other Candidates like her.

IF YOU BEEN PAYING ATTENTION
MAYBE HE WAS WORKING FOR THE DEER.
This was one of the stories from METAtropolis green. I read the first book in the series and was not impressed. I love John Scalzi, but his friends can't write. Kowal had a great story in Rip-Off called The Lady Astronaut of Mars. I then read Kiss Me Twice in a Short Novel anthology and could not finish it. This I could finish, but barely. The story is that this woman takes movies and tells stories about simple things she does on earth and sells them to people who never leave their homes. She was filming deer cross the road when the story starts. From then on it is blah, blah, blah. She slowly tries to remember what happened as she tells the story and she is extremely detailed to the point of nausea.
Skip this and skip the series.

No Regrets
Enjoyed Allyson Johnson's narration of the story, really brought it to life!
The story itself, while I can't say anything was particularly bad about it, I can say I've heard better. That being said I would none the less recommend it to a friend. I found Kowal's world building to be immersive and the story exciting and even a bit nerve racking at times.
Definitely worth a listen =)
