Publisher's summary

The world is on the brink of war. Fisk and Shoe - mercenaries, not wanting to get caught in the middle of a political whirlwind - must deliver a very important message and find a very dangerous man.

They have caught the eye of the powerful men of the world, and now the stakes are higher than they like. And the Emperor has decreed that Livia Cornelius, pregnant with Fisk's child, must travel to the far lands of the Autumn Lords on a diplomatic mission. It will mean crossing half the world and facing new dangers. And in the end, she will uncover the shocking truth at the heart of the Autumn Lords' Empire. A truth which will make the petty politics of war and peace unimportant and will change the world.

The world is burning. Rume is under attack. The Autumn Lords, rulers of the Tchinee Empire, have had their true nature revealed. The Emperor descends into madness. And Fisk and Shoe - unlikely heroes, very likely mercenaries - must find their way to Fisk's wife and child, whom he has never seen. There might be quite a lot in their way. A war, for one thing. But Livia is as determined as Fisk to be reunited. And Shoe may have a plan....

Turn back now

I had trepidations after completing the first book, but I thought that once I wrapped my head around the convoluted world building I would be able to simply enjoy the characters. Alas, that was not to be. Plot twists were telegraphed so far in advance there was little drama. There are attempts to convey the wonder of experiencing a new culture, but it rings hollow because the diary style accounts lack depth of emotion and there is too much repetition. I'm listening to the 3rd book because I made it this far and I want a sense of completion, but I'm not sure it's worth it. Steven Pacey's skills are poorly showcased, and his American accent is lacking though he does use more American pronunciations (rather than English) than he did in book 1. If you finished book 1 and you are wondering if it is worth moving on, turn back now...
