Publisher's summary

In the sprawling gardens of their neighboring estates, childhood friends Miles and Elise spent countless pleasant days together in the spirited adventures of youth. They were inseparable - until Elise vanished without a trace. Miles searched, but Elise could not - or would not - be found.

After years spent laboring on the family plantation in the West Indies, Miles Linwood is shocked by the unexpected news: He has inherited his distant cousin's estate and the title of Marquess of Grenton. Miles' return to England is tarnished by only one thing: He is still haunted by Elise's mysterious disappearance. So when he glimpses a woman with a startling resemblance to his lost friend, he's shaken to the core. This is no mere shadow of the past: It is truly Elise.

But his dear friend has changed - to the point that he questions whether it is really her, though he knows it is. Accustomed to rescuing Elise from childhood escapades, Miles takes her and those in her care back to his estate, even as he struggles to understand her fear and mistrust. As their friendship and feelings slowly blossom again, the shocking truth of their separated years is revealed, and Miles realizes more than ever that he must protect Elise. She slipped away once, and he cannot lose her again.

Emotionally satisfying, but...

This was a well-paced but shallow story, speckled with colloquialisms and customs that temporarily jarred me out of my suspension of disbelief. All you need to do is read Jane Eyre or P&P to know high-class people did not show up at people's homes without warning, and there were a number of phrases used we never see in novels written during that period but do today. But I'm a purist. To put it another way, the skeleton of this story was well-put-together, but it was poorly fleshed out. I'm glad it was 50% off, and I still think I paid too much.

As a single, fully heterosexual romantic type of guy, I loved the sense that the title and blurb gave me. I could fully imagine the pain a man can experience upon discovering that the women he has loved and thought lost has been terribly hurt. I just wish this writer could have put more effort into fulfilling that expectation.

A clean love story

A well written book and Aubrey did a nice job with the narration. The only reason this review was a 4 instead of a 5 is because the story was so dark and depressing that I feel it took away from the love story. I felt heavy hearted and not the usual happy about life self after reading a nice love story.

Charming

I loved this book. Even though the narrator has an American accent, she speaks soft enough and her dialogue is in an English accent that I barely even noticed after a few minutes.

Wonderful

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The beautiful love between the characters was touching. I always appreciate humble, kind and romantic characters with just enough suspense.

Good Story

The story is good. The narrator is fine. So why 3 stars?
The beginning and ending chapters are great. The middle, in my opinion, is a bit muddled, repetitive, and long.
I have loved many books from this author and I am sure to love more. This simply was not my favorite.
