2025-0705 FOOD TRAVEL USA WITH ELIZABETH DOUGHERTY
The TRUTH About Food and Travel
    Original Broadcast Date: 07/05/2025

FULL SHOW: This week on Food Travel USA, Elizabeth exposes deception, nostalgia, revenge, and breathtaking escapes. In the food hour, she unpacks the slow and toothless changes in food safety laws, where banned additives are replaced with loopholes and false labels. A restaurant manager is caught sleeping with employees in exchange for tips in a very troubling "Server’s Revenge," and Elizabeth counts down 10 iconic '90s foods making surprisingly healthy comebacks. But the most damning report of all? The corruption in America’s beef supply—where consumers are fed lies alongside lab-grown mystery meat. She closes the food hour with a fizzy, no-nonsense taste test of flavored beers. In her travel news, another country that relies on tourism dollars is imposing tourist tax and sparking chaos. Elizabeth reveals the top 10 heritage spas in the U.S. for budget-friendly relaxation, tells the heartbreaking story of how the TSA took Petey (a stuffed animal belonging to an autistic child) and she investigates the tragic and preventable loss of life in Texas floods, In her "Destination Unknown" segment, she takes us to the wild beauty of Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands.

Once hailed as a heart-healthy miracle, oats have become the darling of breakfast tables, fitness influencers, and plant-based marketers. But what if the entire oat industry is built on shaky science and shady marketing? In this segment, Elizabeth reveals the hidden story behind America’s obsession with oats—how corporate lobbying distorted nutritional science and how most oat-based foods are loaded with sugar, preservatives, and glyphosate residues. The halo effect around oats comes from a few well-placed studies decades ago, but the real story is far more processed. Oat milk, in particular, often contains more additives than actual oats. And that “heart-healthy” claim? It only applies to whole oats—and even then, the benefits are marginal. This feature peels back the cozy, comforting image of oats and exposes how you’ve been sold a lie. Whether you’re eating oatmeal for breakfast or sipping oat milk in your coffee, you may want to rethink what’s in your bowl.

Major food companies are now falling in line with RFK Jr.’s demand to eliminate toxic dyes—especially Red Dye #3—from their products. The surprising part? They’re doing it voluntarily. From candy giants to snack brands, many are reformulating their ingredients in anticipation of a potential ban. This shift is fueled less by consumer pressure and more by a fear of lawsuits, negative press, and government scrutiny if Kennedy wins. But not everyone’s happy about it. Prominent Democrats and industry lobbyists are accusing Kennedy of fear-mongering and pseudo-science, despite mountains of global evidence showing cancer links. Elizabeth breaks it down: the science, the politics, and the raw hypocrisy. When Europe banned these dyes decades ago, America kept them. Now, the tide is turning, and it’s shaking the food industry to its core. In this segment, Elizabeth explains why the backlash says more about party loyalty than public safety—and what it means for your next grocery trip.

But what happens when the customer’s got a bad attitude and a stopwatch? In this twisted tale of Server’s Revenge, Elizabeth shares the story of one guy who weaponized customer service standards to the point of absurdity.. Plus, meet Brutus, a tiny Papillon with big ears and even bigger drama. His unexpected antics on the dog-friendly “petio” set off a chain reaction you won’t believe.

“Natural.” “Wholesome.” “Farm-fresh.” These comforting words are mostly fiction. In this week’s Top 10 countdown, Elizabeth exposes the most misleading terms used on food packaging and breaks down what they really mean. You’ll learn why “All Natural” doesn’t mean what you think it does, how “No Added Sugar” still allows for chemically altered sweetness, and why “Cage-Free” doesn’t guarantee anything humane. From “Gluten-Free” junk food to meaningless health halos like “Lightly Sweetened,” this segment reveals how food companies manipulate language to push processed products under a health-conscious disguise. Elizabeth walks through how each label plays on fear, trust, or nostalgia to drive sales—and how many of these claims are not regulated at all. If you’ve ever picked up a package thinking you were making a healthy choice, this list might infuriate you. These aren’t marketing flukes—they’re deliberate deceptions. And they’ve been lying to you for years.

    Episode #:
    Original Broadcast Date: 06/23/2025

RV owners, beware: some older campgrounds may not have the correct power outlet for your rig, so instead of the normal 30 amp outlet, you might be forced to plug into a 50-amp outlet using one of those adapters. It sounds easy, but it can go very wrong—very fast. In this cautionary tale, Elizabeth shares our own story that resulted in a melted mess and a potential fire. Why? Because not all adapters regulate current properly, and RV wiring isn’t one-size-fits-all. There is a HUGE difference between those "dog bone" adapters and converters, and you MUST use a surge protector. This was nearly a painful lesson for us that could cost thousands.

If you’re new to RV life or planning a summer trip, this is one segment you can’t afford to skip.
