Publisher's summary

Are you tired of the traditional passive (or evil) female folktale characters? Doug Lipman has unearthed and reassembled 5 tales of women - but none of them are the hand-wringing variety. The heroines take command of their lives in entertaining and engaging ways. These tales come from all over the world, including Iraq, Poland, Vietnam, South Africa, and Spain. The collection includes "The Chicken Woman," "The Woman Who Saved the City," "The Clever Wife of Vietnam," "The One with the Star on Her Forehead" (more commonly known to Westerners as "Snow White" but with an unexpected twist), and "La Muerta: Godmother Death."

Critic reviews

"Each story entertainingly demonstrates how a woman relying on her own resourcefulness takes control of her life. On cold winter nights, little girls nowadays will have a lot more to choose from." (The Boston Phoenix)

can't hear anything

It's really hard to hear. It's annoying but you want to hear it. I can't tell if it's special effects or what...but maybe 3 minutes in you can hear him. It also reminds me of someone reading a bedtime story. Worth 2 bucks I guess.

Poor sound quality

The sound is clear and strong when he is singing, however, when he is speaking it is often only half the strength and difficult to understand. The poor recording quality requires that you concentrate on what is said in order to understand the story. This needs to be reengineered with a new narrator.
