Publisher's summary

Something dark has been brewing in the small town of Minot, North Dakota.

Something waiting for the perfect storm to free it from its shackles.

Something that only comes out when it rains.

After a night of camping turns deadly for Rory and his friends, the town sheriff finds no trace of wrongdoing. No bodies. No blood. No nada. Sheriff Hooper scoffs at their story about the dead people who came out of the lake. The moss-covered ones that allegedly dragged their friends, kicking and screaming, back into the water with them. It doesn't take long for the dwindling group of survivors to uncover who is responsible for the uprising, and what follows is a tidal wave of bloodshed and horror that will leave the listener afraid to go near the water, let alone leave the house when it rains.

Surprisingly good!!

I've read some pretty mixed reviews regarding this, so didn't really expect much from it when I started, but I'm so happy to say that I really really enjoyed it.

The plot plodded along nicely. It wasn't extremely fast paced but had a steady pace the whole way through. It centered on a lake in Minot, North Dakota. A funeral parlour decided that they would start dumping bodies into the lake instead of burying them in their fine caskets! Add in a toxic spill and some lightening to hit the lake and, bam, you have you Zombies! I have to say that it was definitely a unique way for the Zombie virus to begin but in a way, I really liked this idea!! Plus after being in the lake a long time, some of the Zombies were grotesque and bloated. *Shudder* Also because the were "born" in the lake, the Zombies can't stray far from water because they can't function without it, so attacks only happen in or around the water, but when a group of friends go camping and partying near the lake, the Zombies attack. The group dwindle down to 3, who make their way for help, only to have the police think they are crazy. They go to the lake but only find the remnants of the party of the night before. While at the lake though, it starts to rain!! Not just rain, but pour! A storm is here, and along with it, the Zombies can rise!!! Who will survive the Floodwater??

As I said, I really loved the idea of how the Zombies came to be and how they can only move if there's water!! Definitely unique in a saturated genre. The characters meanwhile were all well written and developed. From the weird ass mortuary assistant (dude, he was weird with a capital W!!) to the childhood boyfriend/girlfriend reunited! Seriously, this author created a very colourful cast of characters!!!!

In all, this was a surprisingly good Zombie book. It kept my attention throughout and made me want to check out more from this author. I would definitely love to see a second book in this series!

This isn't the first book I've listened to that has been narrated by J. Scott Bennett, nor will it be my last. He has a pleasant and easy to listen to voice and reads a story well. He has a range of tones and voices and always delivers!

I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t enjoy it

I wasn’t inspired by this audiobook. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t enjoy it either.

The story concept was unoriginal and had some fairly gaping plot holes, but it could have been elevated into something much better if it had been paired up with the right narrator for the job. Unfortunately, I don’t think J. Scott Bennett was the right narrator – he didn’t incorporate any emotion into the characters or add to the suspense, the audio itself was slow and wasn’t able to hold my attention or interest.
The production quality was good and I wondered if it was just me being fussy that was getting in the way of my enjoying this book but the more I think about it, the more I think that it really was the lack of any emotion and intonation that made it hard to latch on to.

Rory is back in his hometown and goes on a lakeside camping trip with his old high school buddies, and you know what that means in any zombie novel! After most of his friends have been devoured, he joins up with a ragtag bunch of survivors and tries to get out of the danger zone before it’s too late.

I never did pick up on the finer points of the whys and wherefores of this zombie outbreak, but the local undertaker has been dumping bodies in the lake which was contaminated with toxic waste a decade ago.
This can obviously mean only one thing… Waterborne zombies.
This idea was actually pretty novel and could have been fascinating, but the story focused more on the survivors rather than the cause of the outbreak.

The story plods on predictably once the zombies have taken their first lumbering steps above the water, though this could be more of a statement on how many zombie novels and films I’ve devoured.

This is one of those rare moments when I highly recommend reading the print edition of this book rather than listening to the audio, I found my attention wandering throughout the story and think that I would have got on much better by reading the book myself.

Another horror book

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed listening to another audio book. I felt the appropriate way about different characters and most importantly I was gripped by tense moments. Good story and good narrator.

Better than expected!

Any additional comments?

I was actually surprised. It was better than expected. I give this book a rating of 3.5, which I'll round up to 4 stars. To break down the story, there was a nuclear spill in the local water. I can't remember the details, but the nuclear waste spill was only mentioned once and I believe the body of water was a lake. The local funeral home is dumping dead bodies in the lake in order to reuse the caskets and make more money. Said dead bodies turn into zombies that require water to function. They advance to where they can come out of the water and walk in the rain. That pretty much sums it up. The ending was the best part. I won't ruin it by giving clues, but it definitely left me wanting more.
The narrator did a fine job. I would like to have hear more fluctuation between voices. Most of the males all sounded the same and all the females sounded the same.

Zombie water world

Beware zombies now swim and live in your local lakes. Which our local lake is brown and disgusting so I personally don’t have to worry. Overall it was a little different from typical zombie stories be it they are in the water where as other stories usually tell you that your safe out in water. I did really like this book , kinda has 80’s slasher flick vibe , which I grew up in 80’s so of course they are some of my favorites. The narrator did great with different characters. I would definitely listen to more of his work. All in all I definitely recommend it if you’re into this genre. I was given this audio in exchange for honest review.

A non-stop action packed story...

Where does Floodwater rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top 50

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I've always enjoyed books that have several main characters. Especially when the setting is a small rural town. This book did not disappoint. I grew to like the characters, even the ones that met their demise early in the story

Have you listened to any of J. Scott Bennett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes I have and he does a great job on all of the characters

If you could take any character from Floodwater out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Any of the characters would be fine

Unique Zombie Story

This story was a unique take on zombies. I don't want to give too much away, but this brand of zombies are found in a lake and only come out when it rains. Unfortunately for our characters, a storm of epic proportions hits their lake town and the undead come out to play.

I enjoyed the story and the characters very much. It was a steady-paced book with good character development. Lots of action, a little romance, and, of course, zombie gore. The ending was a little bit of a cliffhanger, but I'm hoping there will be another installment to finish the story (in a perfect world...). The narration was great also. I enjoyed listening to the narrator's voice as he had great voices for all of the characters.

I received this audiobook at no charge via AudioBookBoom in exchange for an honest review. I give this book a solid 4 and highly recommend it if you are a fan of zombie fiction.

Zombie apocalypse with a twist

This is an entertaining and creepy story that has a bit of a different take than most other zombie apocalypse books. The story moved forward at a good pace, had action, suspense and some great characters. Scott Bennett's narration in the audiobook was excellent, his voice pulled you into the story and made you feel the tension, suspense, fear and sorrow in this story. It is an enjoyable, well written story that ends with an unexpected twist at the end. I received this audiobook at no cost and under no obligation.
