Publisher's summary

A string of suicides. A community in terror. And a chilling conspiracy only DI Amy Winter can crack.

A wave of apparent suicides hits a string of seaside resorts, but when a police officer is named as the latest to die, DI Amy Winter suspects there may be more than mere coincidence to these tragic deaths. But what dark motive could cause someone to throw themselves into the cold depths of the North Sea?

Someone in the community knows more than they are letting on, but Amy’s questions are met with resistance. A group of mysterious teenagers might hold the key, but why are they so afraid to talk? Meanwhile, after the release from prison of her serial killer mother, Amy is fighting her own demons.

In her toughest investigation yet, Amy must confront her dark past if she is to put an end to the carnage. What secret is so terrible that it’s worth killing a police officer for? Amy needs to find the answer, before the sea washes up any more bodies.

Unlikable main character

Amy winter gets more unlikable with every book. I don’t remember this quality about her in the first couple books but in these last couple it seems like she is someone that sees sexism in every inch of life. I mean Donovan makes a comment and Amy immediately goes to because she’s a woman question even though it had nothing to do with that and she would’ve figured that out if she had waited. I mean in the last book she got mad because the killer that she was trying to trap didn’t flirt with her and she chalk that up to him being sexist. She takes any situation that she possibly can and tries to make it about sexism. It gets incredibly annoying. She continues to talk about the police force being sexist against women although it undercuts her argument seeing as she is a high-ranking officer herself. It also gets very annoying when she shows her double standard and her inability to think anyone can do the job without her or better than her. I mean when she finds out an officer is working undercover she criticizes him for not telling her and says we could have worked this together and yet all she does is go off on her own and keep everyone in the dark. The series is pretty good as a whole, but Amy is probably the most unlikable character in the series aside from her murdering mother.

This is the last time

I've been through all the titles in the series, but this is the last. I'm never a fan this type "damaged" detective. There is NO possible way any part of this story would actually happen.

Its ridiculous that I'm supposed to believe her backstory with the serial killer parents. I can ignore those parts. I stuck with it the entire way. It wasn't bad until the few chapters. That's when this took a hard turn into crazy land. There isn't a way to fully explain without giving it away.

Now the first turn, ok, not probable. Tried to keep going and just went swinging for the fences on the crazy. Never rolled my eyes that many times in 4 hours before.

If you don't care about the probability thing you might like it

Absolutely Fantastic!

Narrator does a great job! FINALLY, a book that ACTUALLY keeps you wondering throughout the entire book!!🥳 Nearly every book in this type of genre that I have read-"CLAIMS" to be the best at keeping you at the edge of your seat or has twists and turns that you will never see coming. (Which let's be honest, 80% of those books are slow, until the end. With those 'big reveals'... being a let down because we figured out the ending before we were halfway through the book!😉) Also, I don't understand how nearly every author has won an award of some kind!? It will say "award winning [___]author "or some version of that. Makes it seem like they hand out these awards like candy on Halloween 🤷‍♀️ HOWEVER, THIS BOOK WOULD DESERVE ONE OF THOSE 'CANDIES.' You might guess one but you will not guess everything in the ending of this book. For once, there is quite a bit going on. It would be wonderful if more authors would do this!!! The author did a fantastic job with this book on all levels. The actual plot line may not be better than the other books in the series but the unfolding, the delivery and the more complex ending (not just having a typical simple ending) how it was laid out ...definitely made this book my favorite above all of them.

#abrknpoet reviewed Flesh and Blood

Flesh and Blood is the fourth instalment in Caroline Mitchell’s series of police procedurals featuring DI Amy Winter, a detective with a dark past. In this book, Winter and her team investigate a series of apparent suicides by drowning in a seaside town, where they encounter a wall of silence and a sinister conspiracy. Meanwhile, Winter has to deal with the aftermath of her serial killer mother’s release from prison and the secrets that haunt her.

This is a fast-paced, gripping and twisty thriller that will keep you hooked until the end. Mitchell’s writing is crisp and engaging, and she creates realistic and complex characters that you will root for or despise. The plot is well-crafted and full of surprises, and the setting is atmospheric and chilling. Fans of the series will enjoy seeing Winter’s character development and learning more about her backstory, while new readers can easily follow along without feeling lost.

Flesh and Blood is a highly recommended read for anyone who loves a good crime thriller with a strong female protagonist and a dark edge. Mitchell is a master of the genre and delivers another outstanding book in this series.

One of-the best of it’s genre.

This story was gripping and well narrated. Story line held my attention. Could not wait for my “bedtime story” each night. The characters were three dimensional and I cared about them. And I was constantly on-edge wondering about how it would turn out.

Love the whole series

I have listened to the whole D I Amy Winters series and have absolutely loved every single book. I can listen to a book in 2 days because I pop my ear buds in every chance I get!
I love how Caroline's crime thrillers are character driven and not heavy on police procedure and police jargon. There are solid, well thought out and clever plots for each book and believable, real characters that you end up rooting for or despising!
The narrator for these books is the perfect choice. Her voice is so well suited to this genre and she puts the characters and mood across so well.
I can't wait for the next installment as the twist at the end of this book has got me desperate to find out what is going to happen in Amy's life next!

Great read!

As always a show stopper, I feel like I’m going to miss any winter until the next chapter. Great characters that draw you in and make you want to get to know them.

DI Amy Winter book 4

Format: audiobook
Narrator: Elizabeth Knowelden

Another fantastic story involving the complex and clever Amy Winter.
What initially was assumed to be a spate of unconnected seaside suicides turns out to be far more than they could have imagined.

Amy has her own personal demons and turmoil but that won’t stop her making connections that the others don’t see and leading her team in solving the case no matter who is responsible for the despicable crimes.

Excellent narration again from Elizabeth Knowelden, she portrays Amy Winter and the others well.
