Publisher's Summary

Can an always-tardy garlic mogul and a punctual Silicon Valley librarian fall in love?

The world needs garlic, and somebody's got to sell that garlic. Cedric Johnson is that man. But even though he's got just about everything he can wish for, Cedric is still missing one thing in his life: someone special. Fate may be on his side, but he encounters a few distractions along the way - like almost being killed by a UPS truck. Oh, and a little case of blackmail.

Ellie Fontaine is a walking Wikipedia with clear professional goals, but when it comes to landing Mr. Right, she doesn't know jack squat. She gives online dating a shot but ends up with an unappetizing buffet of unibrows and losers. What's a girl to do?

After Ellie saves Cedric's life, serendipity takes over as they continue to run into each other. Their connection grows stronger with each meeting, even though he embodies her number-one pet peeve: He's always late. But even if they can get past their issues and misunderstandings, Ellie's ex-boyfriend, an unscrupulous cop, will do anything to keep them apart.

Five Minutes Late is a hilarious, fast-paced romantic comedy full of snappy dialogue and fun, quirky characters, guaranteed to warm your heart.

A breath of fresh (garlic-scented) air

I had bought this book for Kindle, but when I had the chance to review the audio, I jumped at it. We have a contemporary romance with kind-hearted and perpetually late business owner Cedric and librarian Allie who is working on getting a promotion while trying to at least get a second date, though her dating pool is filled with a bunch of duds.

The characters meet each other and almost date. They get wires crossed and have misunderstandings. Misunderstandings are typical in romances, but I am very relieved to report that none of the happenings are of the “characters too stupid to live” variety.

We have some good side characters here. Cedric has a full cast of friends who love and support him. Allie has her grandfather, her library friends and her power-tripping ex who lives to make Cedric’s life hard.

I like that each character has personal goals and exists as more than just part of the romance. I also got some extra fun from the fact that Allie goes to the ALA convention in San Francisco as that will actually be held there this year. (I know. I’m a librarian and will be there with bells on.)

Fundamentally these characters are good people with similar values who just click. It’s gratifying when they get together. The story is evenly paced, and it comes to a satisfying end.

The audio performance was very good. Just as it’s refreshing to have a male write a romance title, it’s also a nice change of pace to have a male narrator. His character voices were never confusing, and he handled one scene in particular really well.

Cedric meets Grandpa Frank at the fundraiser toward the end of the book, and neither knows who the other person is. They get along well, even though it is not clear from written word alone who the person is who his talking to Cedric. The performance made it so as a listener I was never confused about who was in the scene.

Another bit that was added to by the performance was the brief scene with Samuel L. Jackson. Yes, that Sam Jackson. Cedric got a golf ball to the head and then ended up daydreaming about it later. I howled out loud with laughter during those parts.

For those of you wondering what the heat level is, the story only has kisses, not even any fade to black scenes. It is clear that Cedric and Allie make a very good couple, though.

This was a very good book, and even though I got it for free (see disclaimer), I would have felt it was money well spent if I’d paid for it myself. If this could be an example of a typical Rich Amooi book, I would gladly read another one.

The heroine in this is not deserving

This entire book Ellie questioned Cedric’s character she did NOT deserve that man.
The book writing was cute and was the light hearted story was looking for but the characters were really hard to connect with so it was hard to tolerate.

Annoying

Ellie was so unlikable! You want to root for her but she was so poorly written and naive it irked me. Also how picky could she have been to have dated her narcissist ex? The narrator at times sounded like a robot.

Funny

Sweet and funny love story ,but I felt like the foul language was totally unnecessary.

A Fun Story

I hated to finish the story because I loved all characters like Tofu, Owen, Javier, and grandpa. This one had a whole town of characters to fall in love with and the only thing I wished was that ending could have had little more details about what happened to Vlad because he played such a big part that it would have been funnier to hear more of him getting into trouble.

Cute

It was a cute story. Very predictable. The narrator was fun, I like when we have a male narrator for a romance. My only problem was it was hard at time to tell which male character was speaking because he didn’t change voices enough. But I would read it again.

Rabid reader

I really enjoyed two of his other stories. I liked this story, and got some laughs, but was disappointed with drop to foul and profane language. Hope other books won’t stoop to this level.
