Publisher's summary

After playing Online together for years, Jason and his friends are excited about the possibilities of the emerging technology of Full-Immersion Virtual Reality, aka FIVR. Preparing for the release of The World, Jason is determined to help his friends realize their dream of becoming pro gamers.

Choosing a 'Nightmare' start to get ahead of the wave of new players starting the game, Jason finds himself alone in the wild tasked with saving a group of refugees from goblin invaders. Although he manages to save the survivors, that's just the beginning of his trials as he desperately fights to bring them back from the edge of annihilation.

Jason is quickly swept up in the adventure as he struggles to build a home for his guildmates and the NPCs that he’s saved. As the trouble heats up, he quickly discovers that marauding goblins are the least of his concerns.

Warning: This is a LitRPG story and contains adult situations, foul language, MMORPG-style violence, and other fun things. Listen at your own risk.

LIT RPG Geek loves it!!

I listen to and read a ridiculous amount of LIT RPG, possibly my way of re-living my Everquest days. Despite the author's apparent love for WoW, I found this book FABULOUS. I notice that there are additional books in this series and I hope Audible adds them soon. Other reviewers have not cared for the narrator, but I found him engaging and easy to listen to. I am usually too lazy to write a review, so this book has obviously made a good impression on me :) Got SoW?

Wonderful start to a new series

I really really enjoyed this book. It's definitely the first book in the series, it sets up a lot and ends without the strongest conclusion but that happens sometimes when your book starts to get long. That aside, I really recommend this book.

The story is coherent, and see well planned out, I have minor fears of out of control power growth but that could be managed or the author could actually have a ending planned for the series (more books would be better if the authors decided to have an end game in mind for the series)
I enjoyed the main character and his story line, I'm excited to see how the story develops and if he succeeds with his "nightmare" mode.

Jason Hill did a great job narrating. There were a few acronyms that were either pronounced directly (MMORPG and PKer) or read as a word, which were new ways to read them, to me at least. Ex: "PKer" was read as "picker" instead of "pee-kay -er"
It's not bad, just different and new to me.

I'm excited for book 2.

Refreshing!

A LitRPG where the Protagonist isn't trapped in the game world! a logical and skilled Main Character who actually feels like a Pro and avid gamer. Using his abilities to their utmost. using creativity and a genuine understanding of Game mechanics to his advantage. Too many MC's in this Genre are either oblivious to everything going on around them or are just plain moronic for the sake of creating Drama. The main Character also takes the Game world seriously and isn't a complete dick to NPC'S or really anyone. He seems like a genuinely nice guy and a good person overall and it's refreshing to have a Protag that's not a complete Douche canoe and doesn't take anyones shit. like he actually has a spine. I'm thoroughly enjoying this series so far and my only complaint is that there isn't more of it yet.

The Narration is solid as well and very well done. I was really able to lose myself in the story and wasn't brought out of it by shoddy narration. there was some issues in the editing of the narration near the end but nothing too horrible.

Good story, but an abrupt end.

The story is pretty good, but it just ends abruptly in the middle of something. The narration is alright. As others have noted it is kind of flat and occasionally sounds as though he is speaking through clenched teeth. All that said, I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Absolutly love the book and hope for more.

This series has a feel of the Survive Week One book series and Awaken Online. The main charadcter trying to get his guild into the pro league of gaming. Lots of character development and action. The flow of the book is great but there are times where the editing of the audio chops words a couple of times. Regardless I will be checking for the second book to drop. If you like this book then check out Ascend Online and Survive Week One maybe also Life Reset.

great book but funny audio at parts

book amazing if very slow progression the whole thing literally is about one day logged on but with great scenes in that day.

audio however is clearly done by a non gamer, who messes up words like PKer by calling them pickers. This is corrected in book 2 luckily

Worth a try

I'll admit it was a bit difficult for me to get through the first third of the book or so that takes place outside of the game, mostly due to the detailed character backstory and repetive information, however, once he actually starts the game the story picks up pretty fast. Overall not a bad listen, I particularly liked the narrator and if not for the trouble at the start I probably would have given it 5 stars.

Decent

What I like about this book is that the world within the game is interesting enough that the author doesn't feel the need to throw in some dystopian plot lines (evil game company, government, ai, gods, hackers) out to enslave mankind or otherwise take over the world. I get just how dangerous the tech is. I don't need that in my litrpg.

Great story, but sloppy narration

Pronunciation by the narrator was so sloppy, did the author even review the audio?

Just get a female & male duo if you have a heavy female cast.

That aside the book and story line were fantastic, great attention to detail and interesting take on VR immersion.
