Publisher's Summary

Laura Doyle's marriage was in trouble. After five years her husband had become distant. He seemed checked out of their relationship, preferring watching TV to making love. There were frequent fights that ended with tense silences and even threats of divorce. Marriage counseling actually made their problems worse. Each session seemed to reinforce the feeling that she and her husband were just too far apart.

Desperate to avoid divorcing the man she loved, Laura tried something different. Rather than consulting with experts or professionals, she simply started talking to women who'd been happily married for more than 15 years. What she discovered shocked her: Everything she had heard in marriage counseling was wrong. Laura realized that there are basic truths that can help women maintain loving, intimate marriages.

After seeing her own marriage transform, Laura set out to help other women do the same. In this audiobook you'll learn Laura's Six Intimacy Skills, which have been used by over 150,000 women who have transformed their previously unhappy marriages into blissful unions.

Good tips but mostly an advertisement.

Author has a website that she plugs throughout the book - then the website appears to be a general dead end unless you hand over some more money for relationship coaching. I find that annoying. Talk about your website in the prologue or acknowledgements, but for goodness' sake don't tell me throughout the book to go there to meet wives who are like-minded and then require that I take part in one of your coaching sessions first. What's the point of that other than to just be greedy. A book should be a book, not an ad for something else. Or, give the book away and charge people for the website.

Nothing in this book is really earth shattering or new. Be nice to your man. Think before speaking. Be happy for what you have. I'm not a controlling woman so I would imagine this book really wasn't for me though. Would have been nice to know that - and the bit about the website - before i spent the credit.

Narration was annoying and chit chatty. I would not pay to hear this person narrate another book. I struggled to listen but I was really committed to finishing in case there were some nuggets buried in the book.

I asked for a divorce then read this book....

Upset that my husband would not keep his counseling appts it proved he did not want to be better for the sake of our marriage. Long story short, the Title of the book pulled me in. Why kill the marriage counselor? I thought it was the only way my marriage could be saved. I kid you not, after 1 week of following this book’s advice my marriage is the best it’s been in a long while and we didn’t have to have that “we need to talk”conversation. By showing gratitude, my husband is now doing things I’ve always wanted plus more. I am baffled at how easy this has been and how happy we both are. Who knew it could take days and not years to fix my marriage. By the way, married for 16 years and no longer thinking of divorce. I can’t believe that I just asked for one a couple of weeks ago. I’m grateful that my husband never gives up on us. I now understand that I am the one who has abandoned him not the other way around. I’m keeping my good guy.

Practical specific advice

This book gives specific practical advice about how to change the only thing you can control: yourself. I read her first book and was shocked by her advice. But I tried it and it worked. My husband even said years later during a rough patch, he wished I would read that book again. Try it.

Refreshing...

It was so refreshing to read a book about improving marriage relationship, written by a woman, but yet unbiased and open towards a man's point of view. This book was wonderful to read, grasping both sides of the story and what a wife can do to improve her intimacy with her husband. It's so common sense too. It only makes sense that if a man is better respected, that he will in turn care for his wife more. This book is not extreme feminist like many "marriage counselor books". Instead of being pro-woman or pro-male, it's pro-intimacy and improving your marriage.

I didn't want to like this book but I did

This book is delivered by the author in a compassionate, empathic tone and loaded with applicable advice. I actually didn't want to like this book because I felt like it was going against the grain of my culturally influenced opinion of men's and women's roles but honestly, this book couldn't have made more sense. Overall, what Laura Doyle says about marriage counseling is generally true and what she is offering instead is an approach that is liberating and effective if you are willing to be open to it. Take and leave what you will but I really think you may take more than you expect.

Best Marriage Book in a While!

I just finished How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, which was also really good and goes a little more into brain science, but this book brought it all together for me. I as a wife have SO MUCH control over the quality of my marriage! I will definitely be spending some time on Laura's website. Highly recommend this book.

Excellent!

I can't believe the difference this book has made in my life. I started listening to it just four days ago but already my marriage had improved! I realized how much time and energy I was putting in to controlling everything in my household! And here I thought I was a "nice" wife. My husband is unaware that I am implementing the practices in this book but I do believe he senses that there has been a shift. Read or listen to this book, you won't regret it! One big plus is that this book is secular, there aren't many marriage books like that.

Absolutely amazing!

I will definitely take what I need from this book. I will not be hiring one of her professionals for a 4 figure sum though 😊

good content, badly put together

I think this would be better to have as a paperback rather than an audiobook so that you can easily go back to relevant pages. The narrator refers to the "6 intimacy steps" about 100 times and I missed the bit that actually lists the intimacy steps! I have to go and try and find it again now. The content is good and i intend to listen again and use it, i just found it wasn't very well structured.
