Publisher's summary

From HiJinks Ink Publishing and Shannon Mayer comes Firestorm, book three in the USA Today best-selling Elemental series. With over one million books sold, Shannon Mayer proves once again she can dominate her genre right out of the gate.

"My name is Larkspur, and I am an Elemental."

My people use the power of the earth to sustain life and defy our enemies. I should be at my father's side as a royal princess. But as a half-breed, bastard child, that isn't going to happen.

In a world of lava and fire, I am about to face my hardest trial yet. Not one of strength, or power, but intrigue and manipulation. However, my tolerance level for anyone outside of my family is at an all-time low, and the queen who rules the Pit expects complete obedience.

As Ash's life is held in the balance, I have just three days to prove his innocence and mine. This place holds more than a scorching heat; new foes, traitors, and creatures from the depths of the lava are all trying to keep us from surviving.

The only question left: Can I get us all out without being burned alive?

Yeah Buddy!!

I love this elemental series! As soon as the book starts your sucked in to the action. Lark is taken to the pit where the action begins. I also am starting to see a beginning of a love triangle. The narrator is Awesome! Well worth the credit!

With Great Risk Comes Great Reward...

The tale of Lark is powerful yet deadly, and this installment is no exception. Almost as soon as the book begins, Lark’s life hangs in the balance and remains that way until the very end. We finally get to see Mayer’s fictional land of the Salamanders (or fire elementals), and it’s what you would expect, and even more. In true Mayer fashion, her affections for Ash remain yet nothing comes easy to them, and much to the reader’s disappointment, they spend most of the book apart.

Not surprisingly, nothing is as it seems which makes you really think about the plot instead of just plodding on. She gets you to question things as Lark does, and ponder what actions she should take, or even what could be lurking around the next corner. Once you get the hang of Mayer’s writing style, this doesn’t come as a surprise, but this book just wasn’t as good as the other two in the series. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but despite the intrigue of what could be perceived as the most mysterious elemental family, it just didn’t capture me the way the others had and should continue to do. It’s quite apparent that everything happens for a reason, and Lark is meant to forge on in this journey of hers, and even by now, the readers only have glimpses of the big picture of what will end up happening in the end. By the end of this book, I can clearly see how this will tie into the Rylee series, and happy to see that Peta finally makes her appearance. Though my misgivings, I still want to know how Lark’s story finally concludes so I’ll keep working my way through the series.

Keeps you jumping at shadows

Trying to figure out who’s with or against Lark and who the mysterious person/people may or may not be isn’t easy. Even with the hints and clues it can be tough to figure out right up to the reveal.
The heartbreaking feelings with these new creatures is well-portrayed. It’s just as heart-breaking hearing about the children. Surprises all the way to the end.

Getting Better

I’m enjoying this series. This was a better book than the one before it. Easier listening. There were a couple of very difficult scenes, but not endless conflicts chained together. A mystery is introduced so I’m looking forward to discovering the resolution. The narrator is one of the best out there for this genre. I could listen to her all day. I’ve listened to her narrate other books outside of this series and she always does a great job.

Larkspur Needs a Win

**Spoilers Ahead**

I have really enjoyed this and the previous two books but our h needs a win. In book 1 her stepmother kills her baby brother and her mother in her face, suppresses her power and everyone including her own father treats her like crap. Even after she saved their entire world from the wicked stepmother. In book 2 the dad sends her to guard her sister after telling her she's worth nothing where she is bitten by sharks, manhandled by a cracked, drowned and made to feel like a failure when her sister was raped on he watch and is forced to carry the seed of am evil bastard (literally) who married his sister along with her sister. After she saved the water kingdom and should be honored as a hero her father hands her off to be tried for "murders" that happened in book 1.
Now in book 3 she is abused on her journey to face her accuser, whipped with a fire whip within an inch of her life and threatened with death until she saved the day when she is then told that they knew she didn't commit the murders. She gets home where her sister sends her off AGAIN but this time to commit a crime against their god. I can't take anymore. Pita was highlight but I need an HEA even a slight one. The beginnings of a love triangle is starting to form and after her stupidity with Cole and I just can't do it.
