Publisher's summary

On a sunny summer morning by the sea in New England, Susan Ford's cocoon of privilege is threatened when an Iraqi man from her distant past boards a plane in Baghdad to come find her.

Mrs. Ford leads a privileged life. From her Blenheim spaniels to her cottage on the coast of Watch Hill, Rhode Island, she carefully curates her world. Hair in place, house in place, life in place, Susan Ford keeps it under control.

Early one morning in the summer of 2014, the past pays a call to collect. The FBI arrives to question her about a man from Iraq - a Chaldean Christian from Mosul - where ISIS has just seized control. Sammy Fakhouri, they say, is his name, and they have taken him into custody, picked him up on his way to her house.

Back in the summer of 1979, on the outskirts of a declining Detroit, college coed Susan meets charismatic and reckless Annie. They are an unlikely pair of friends, but they each see something in the other - something they'd like to possess. Studious Susan is a moth to the flame that is Annie. Yet, it is dazzling Annie who senses that Susan will be the one who makes it out of Detroit.

Together, the girls navigate the minefields of a down-market disco where they work their summer jobs. It's a world filled with pretty girls and powerful men, some of whom - like Sammy Fakhouri - happen to be Iraqi Chaldeans.

What happened in that summer of 1979 when Susan and Annie met? Why is Sammy looking for Susan all these years later? And why is Mrs. Ford lying?

Praise for Finding Mrs. Ford:

''An exquisitely written literary thriller that compels the reader forward right to the last page.'' (Patricia Chadwick, author of Little Sister)

''Written from start to finish with crisp and poignant prose, compelling characters and setting, Finding Mrs. Ford entertains as much with imagery as with its masterful plot twists. I couldn't put it down.'' (Jeanne McWilliams Blasberg, author of Eden)

''Brimming with vivid characters and emotional insight, Finding Mrs. Ford tackles big themes of identity, friendship, and loss, spinning out the suspense to the last page. A total triumph.'' (Beatriz Williams, New York Times best-selling author)

5

I rarely find a 5. This book is so good I was glad when it was over
--- I needed it to be over
so I could get on with my life
:-) The publisher's blurb got my
curiosity up so I tried it. WOW.
It is very, very good. Don't get
discouraged if it doesn't feel like other mysteries. * Some of my
liking for this one may be my age,
give or take, these are my contemporaries.

Finding Mrs. Ford

Not a bad book for a free download. It starts off a bit slow, but after a couple chapters, I was intrigued. I liked how I became invested in the main character, regardless of her actions. Certainly worth a listen.

Felt like I was home

What a surprise to recognize so many locations in this book. It made it even more enjoyable. Well written with wonderful little twists and turns to challenge the reader.

Coming of Age with a twist

Two young women in suburban Detroit, just trying to make a living and get by are caught up in a ring of intrigue that they never saw coming and which really changes their lives forever. The book starts slowly and really picks up speed as a page turning ending!

Deborah Goodrich Royce - BRAVO

This was not a (yet again) female detective story. It doesn't push any politics or religion on you. Royce has no agenda except tell a well imagined and written story that delivers. Royce's example of being young, naive and at the wrong place at the wrong time will resonate with so many. I began remembering friends from the past that could have been a Susan or Annie. You will too. Mixed with a peppering of Soprano's it is so worth the time.
Saskia Maarleveld narration was more the great. Where has she been hiding?
I will be looking for more from both Deborah Goodrich Royce and Saskia Maarleveld.

More importantly it definitely distracted me from todays headlines, and who doesn't want that?

Good but not great

I enjoyed the book, however it was a bit lackluster. I kept thinking there was some big twist, but it never came. Still the performance was enjoyable, the characters were dynamic, and generally the story held my interest.

Riveting page turner...

Well written with a great storyline, perhaps it was my own personal history… I could actually put myself in some of the places within the book. The characters were wonderfully developed as well as the story.

Long

Good premise for a story but way too long. The story kept going back and forth in time which was annoying and confusing at times. Way too long and too many details that didn't really add to the story. Not worth a credit but ok if you have the Plus catalog.

Implausible every step of the way.

Each plot point lacks the depth necessary for the events to make look vocal sense. Ugh. No wonder it was available for no charge.

Good story

I liked this book and remember so much of the same things being almost the same age as Susan and Annie in 1979. I never worked at a disco but remember going to them. I like how the story was told about 2 girls just working over the summer changed everything. If their paths had not connected that summer, how different it would have been for both of them.
