In this tour de force, the University of Oxford’s Dr. Tim Mawson turns a thoughtful eye to the questions about existence you have undoubtedly asked yourself. An expert on the philosophy of religion, Dr. Mawson combines wit with masterful scholarship to explain deep philosophical topics in an easy-to-understand yet erudite manner.

In 12 captivating lectures, you will look at how philosophers throughout history have debated the meaning of life and God’s role in it, exploring historical approaches to finding meaning before turning to contemporary perspectives and the schools of thought that underlie them. As you grapple with monumental topics, you will consider contrasting beliefs about meaning, purpose, and the existence of a higher power. You will also scrutinize philosophers’ prevailing views on the subject. Some of their views may resonate with you; others you may reject straight out. In either case, Dr. Mawson will have spurred you to rethink your own values and methods of creating meaning. After listening to God and the Meaning of Life, you will walk away with innovative ways to think about God and the afterlife.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Tim Mawson is a distinguished analytic philosopher of religion, and his previous book on the meaning of life is an impressive contribution to the literature on this topic, and is notable for its energetic and meticulous argumentation." (John Cottingham, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Reading University and Honorary Fellow of St John’s College Oxford)

Prof. Mawson knows how to ask, frame and explore the truly great questions. I find his organization and presentation style refreshingly clear and engaging. I highly recommend this series to anyone interested in a rich exploration of philosophy or religion.

The paragon of a great philosophy professor!

Hello.
The course is solid, well-presented.
Reflections presented are priceless and recommended.
YET this is a serious, heavyweight, British-style course, NOT for those who typically read about "philosophy" or "spirituality" in lifestyle magazines and agony aunt columns.

priceless but heavyweight reflections

The author is, it seems to me, an example of one who espouses "the God of philosophers" (or of philosophy), in that the god presented here is no more than a philosophical concept that adds more meaning than he/it takes away from our existence. The author also holds several (not just one) heterodox views of the afterlife. Last, his way of speaking is distracting and hard to hear at times. He does a good job of laying out the material, although some may be bothered because he is over-repetitive.

heterodox view of "God" and "heaven"
