Publisher's summary

As a young girl Diana decided she liked fencing more than being a proper lady, but sometimes embracing the rules of society is a necessary evil. Fortuna’s Parlor gives her the opportunity to utilize her love of fencing, and town balls are the perfect place to hold the clandestine matches.

Roguish behavior, gambling, and expensive brandy are Luther Wright, Earl of Northesk’s favorite vices. They each play a part in burying the demons that haunt him. One night everything changes and he is forced to question every decision he’s made.

After a chance encounter at one of Diana’s fencing matches Luther decides to court her. Her strong will and his need to protect her clash, and only time will tell if they are able to find a way past their differences, and in turn, an enduring love.

Fun and Quick

Regency era romances have always pulled me in. I so enjoyed this scandalous tale by Dawn Brower. The characters are developed and the story has a great plot. Without giving away spoilers, I loved how the main characters had their eyes opened to what was important. Price Waldman did a great performance with this book. He gave distinguishable voices to the various characters. I will definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator.

Has a Classical Feel

I really enjoyed listening to this one. I loved how strong Diana is as a character. Both Luther and Diana seem to be leading parallel lives and both have the opportunity to experience something they both thought they never would, love.

Well written, well developed characters that are very relatable. I like that this was from both character's points of view. It's just a cute evening listen.

The narrator was a perfect fit, and did a great job in this performance.

This was a quick romantic listen that kept me engaged. I will continue to look forward to more by this author!

Nice

If you get a chance to hear it, you'll enjoy it and you'll like the guy whose telling it.
It had fun, humor and a lot of feistiness .You'll enjoy all the characters and you hope for the best between Luther Wright, The Earl of Northesk and Diana and hope they eventually get together. Their best friends deserve a story or two themselves. Since some of them are very interesting. So if you ever get a chance, check it out and enjoy. You'll be glad you did.

A Light Enjoyable Read

This historical romance is interesting and well written. Characters are are developed in such a fashion as they are believable, humorous, and romantic. This is the first book I have read from this author however, I immediately looked up other writings and placed most on my Audible Wish List. For those who enjoy a rom com and like a quick beach listen- this is for you.

Find Me Love

Diana wanted more from life than she is supposed to in this time period and she thinks she is so plain and ordinary she will never find love. That is until her family's neighbor reappears in her life. I am loving this series and the fact that these ladies have their own gambling establishment. That would have been so risky in this time! Nice job on the Narration.

Exciting, thrilling and fun read

The author brings jumps right into the romance as a lady tries her best to be a lady and a gentleman tries his best to court her. The two do not see eye to eye the lady wants to live, feel the thrills life brings, she so much wants to learn to fence, he so much wants to keep her safe. It is a fight against will one demanding marriage the other just wants to be left alone. The lady finds the gentleman to bossy and just what does he mean she can’t do this or that. Well she will show him, it isn’t like they have any attachments, and what does he mean he is marrying her, he must have lost his mind. The gentleman finds the lady to be to bold, seeking danger but man can she swing a sword.

I thought the narrator did a wonderful job on his character voices, as well as giving true emotion to them. It was very easy to know who was talking and what they were feeling. There are no repeating of words, no volume changes, and no breaks were taken that I could tell. It was a story I enjoyed and had trouble putting down. He made me believe what was happening as he took me on a journey of humor, anger and the thrill of romance. It was a very clear audio that I plan on listening to again.

The author really takes you back in time giving a thrilling listen with wonderful character that does battle as they find they can’t live without each other. It is well written and thought out. I truly enjoyed this story, I loved the humor and found myself laughing, chuckling along with a few hold your breath moments.

Fun addition to the series

I think by now I should consider myself a lover of Dawn Brower books. I have devoured and listened to her romance series all month and they always make me swoon. This book was no exception. However, unlike the next book in the series, I was left wanting a little more spark between the two love interests. This is not to say I didn't enjoy the romance, but I felt like it showed a little bit and left us wanting for more. Overall I enjoyed the story a lot and the narrator did a great job, but I don't think this is the strongest book in the series.

I received a free copy of this book upon request. This didn’t affect my judgment of this book in any way.

Lady Fencer Meets Her Match

I'll admit that when they first started popping up in Regency romances, I didn't like the idea of female gaming hells or young ladies of the ton doing era-masculine activities like fencing or pugilism. While I'm still not wild about the pugilism, I've become more accustomed to and accepting of these concepts. The heroine at the heart of the story is deeply involved with the business of Fortuna's Parlor, a women-only gaming hell that also has bets on things like female fencing matches. The heroine herself is an advanced fencer, having been taught by a female gypsy years before. The book starts with a chapter five years before the story that forms the bulk of the book. The hero is newly returned to the area, the new heir after his father's passing. Even though both are quite young—she at 15 and he 21—they have a bond and a seemingly natural understanding of each other because they have known each other since they were children. He acknowledges to himself that she has become an attractive young lady but knows she is far too young for any serious interest … and he has far too much on his plate already. Fast forward five years, and he's become a rather dissolute lord, wallowing still in his father's death. Early on, however, he has an epiphany—which wasn't quite shown to be of such strength to be wholly believable—which makes him decide he needs to become the man his father would have wanted him to be. To this end, he decides it's time to find a wife and sets out nearly immediately for his first ton ball.

Of course, he meets the heroine again at this ball, makes some serious blunders, but quickly decides she's the one for him. The twists and turns of the plot are well done, and I won't detail them here any more than I have. The hero cleverly negotiates with the heroine to get her to consider his suit. He can certainly be charming when he wants to be, though he struggles with the independent, unconventional woman she has become. Their feelings and concerns seemed realistic and believable, making both sympathetic characters. This book has some fantastic secondary characters as well. I loved the heroine's besties, who at least twice in the book helped her figure out her own mind and heart. Will he be able to not only look beyond how she is decidedly different from most young ladies but appreciate her for it? Will she tailor her dreams for independence and consider him a welcome addition? You will have to listen to (or read) this delightful book to find out!
